Phyllis Loretta Mayfield Obituary
Phyllis Loretta Mayfield Mayfield
Mar. 29, 1926-Oct. 17, 2017
Bouder Creek, CA
Born Phyllis May Greenly, in Hilmar CA, Phyllis grew up in San Francisco, in sight of the Golden Gate Bridge. She was an avid liberal, a feminist, a poet, a peace activist, a lover of nature. Phyllis graduated from Lowell High School and UC Berkeley. She married Bob Newman, who she met in High School, and moved to Millbrae CA to raise a family. Later she got a Masters degree in Library Science from San Jose State and was a school librarian in S. San Francisco for 15 years. The kind of librarian that did not want kids to shush, just learn and enjoy books. On retirement, Bob and Phyllis built a house with their own hands on family property in Boulder Creek where she lived the rest of her life. She joined the Emerald St. Poetry group, was well known, especially for her love poems, and was once appointed Poet Laureate of Boulder Creek. Phyllis grew up in a family of singers and loved singing up to her last days. At family gatherings with her brother and sisters, they would sing beautiful 4 part harmony. She was in the Methodist Church choir most of her life both in Millbrae and Boulder Creek. She died surrounded by her family, home at "The Ranch" a place she always loved. She is survived by sister Jean, son Clayton, daughters Margie and Natasha, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Service at Boulder Creek Methodist Church Nov. 4 at 11:00am.
