Ray Clegg Westman Obituary

Ray Clegg Westman passed away December 28, 2010 in Santa Cruz, of heart failure. She was 89.

Ray was born in Ramapo, New York, on Sept. 16, 1921, one of five children. Her family moved to the San Francisco Peninsula where she met and married an army officer in 1941. Her children were born during the war years and were raised in Atherton. During this time Ray started her life-long commitment to services supporting the blind and visually impaired by learning Braille transcription through the Red Cross. Ray lived in New York City for several years where she volunteered for Recording for the Blind. She ultimately returned to the Palo Alto area and established a chapter of Recording for the Blind there. In the early 1970's Ray moved to Santa Cruz and was a founding member of Doran Resource Center for the Blind. This center is now the Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Ray was Director Emerita of Vista Center until her death and donated the building that houses Vista Center's Santa Cruz offices. She was President of the Board of Peninsula Endowment, a Palo Alto based foundation which supports the work of the Palo Alto chapter of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic as well as other organizations serving the blind and visually impaired in the Bay Area. Ray was also a volunteer Braille transcriber for the Santa Cruz County Office of Education and a Braille instructor. She made many dear friends during her years of volunteering.

Throughout her life Ray traveled widely for both personal enjoyment and in conjunction with the family steamship business. In her last years she said how lucky she was to have traveled to every place she had wanted to see.

Ray is survived by sister Belle Hays of Comptche, son Nels Westman and wife Susan of Capitola, daughter Carin Hanna and husband Glenn of Santa Cruz; grandchildren Daun Wallace of Aptos, Blake Westman of Saratoga,Tyler Westman of Sacramento, Andrew Westman of Pleasanton; and five great-grandchildren. Her family appreciates the care and companionship of her longtime caregivers, Mary Jo and Gloria.

A memorial service will be held on January 12th at 2:00 PM at Oakwood Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 413 Laurel Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.
