Roberta Jean Haver
May 30th 1940 – May 25th 2018
Resident of Scotts Valley
On Friday, May 25th, Roberta "Bobbie" Jean Haver, a sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, mentor, and lifelong friend came to the end of her journey at age 77. Bobbie called herself "a rare disease warrior" against Multiple System Atrophy and Parkinsonism Disease.
Bobbie Jean was a strong woman who radiated love and moved through life with a positive aura, touching the lives of all who crossed paths with her. She most definitely left this world a better place and will continue to dance in the hearts of all who knew her.
Bobbie was born in Endicott, New York, and moved to San Jose, California when she was 14 years old. She married and had four children. She then moved to Scotts Valley with her family where they ran the family business, Haver's Rhododendrons, from 1984 to 1994.
Childhood friends called her "Bobbie Jean the Barefoot Queen" since she was often seen outdoors without shoes on and for her love of Mother Earth. At age 56, Bobbie graduated from UCSC with a degree in Environmental Studies. Bobbie's love of nature and passion for preserving it was demonstrated through her work. She became a docent at Wilder Ranch State Park while attending UCSC and transitioned into a State Park Interpreter until 2013. From 1996 to 2010, Bobbie spearheaded the Arana Gulch Watershed Alliance in order to protect the Santa Cruz Harbor, conserve natural resources, and restore water quality.
Away from work, Bobbie had a playful and competitive side: she was an avid game player. She was always ready for a challenge, from board games to card games to puzzles - anything that would bring the people she loved around a table.
Bobbie will be lovingly remembered by many including her siblings: Lewene, Dick, and Carl; children and their spouses: Richard Haver and Thuy, Vivian Leib and Steven, Linda Haver-Romeo and Joey, and Kathy Haver-Theilen and Jeff; and grandchildren: Jessica, Justine, Sarah, Nicholas, Brianna, Wesley, and Ashley, along with so many others whose lives she's touched. We are also eternally grateful for the caregivers who have become family as they helped make Bobbie's life as comfortable as possible.
There will be a Celebration of Life on May 30th, Bobbie's 78th birthday. Please join us at Oakwood Chapel – Santa Cruz Memorial, 3301 Paul Sweet Road at 1pm to share memories and celebrate this extraordinary woman. Memorial donations in memory of Bobbie Jean can be made to the MSA Coalition.
