Vince "Doc" Quartararo

A vigil ceremony and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday and Friday for Vince Quartararo who passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz on August 25, 2007 at the age of 92. Born in San Francisco, he was raised there and graduated from Lowell High School. Following his graduation from University of San Francisco, he later became a Doctor of Podiatry. As a podiatrist, he served his country during WW II in the US Army, earning the rank of sergeant. Upon completion of his military service, he moved to Santa Cruz in 1945. For more than 60 years, "Doc" as he was affectionately known by many, practiced podiatry in Santa Cruz; raised a family of seven children, retiring in 1990. He was especially proud to have been named to the Board of Podiatrists by then Governor Pat Brown.

Doc was very civic minded and volunteered his time to many organizations in Santa Cruz. He had served as Grand Knight for Knights of Columbus Council #971 and was devoted to his Catholic Faith, attending mass regularly. Also very active in the Boy Scouts of America, he was the recipient of Silver Beaver Award, which is the highest honor offered by that organization. He also volunteered his time to The California Grey Bears, and St. Francis Soup Kitchen. Doc was very interested in photography and enjoyed it as a hobby. His family will forever hold dear, the many memories and photos which he took of his family, and the way he would make them laugh with his comical personality and wide smile, just before taking the picture.

He is survived by his son and daughter in-law, Rod and Jean Quartararo of Santa Cruz, his daughters and sons in-law, Mary and Mark Dettle of Scotts Valley, Anne Scott-Chambers and Steve Chambers of Santa Cruz, Barbara and Darrell Hutchinson of Novato, and Ysabel Quartararo and Julie Quartararo-Coyan both of Santa Cruz. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Doc was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Quartararo in 1988, his son, Tom Quartararo and his brother, Louis Quartararo both in 2000.

Friends may pay their respects at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel on Thursday, August 30th form 12 noon until 6:30 p.m. A recitation of the Holy Rosary and Vigil service will then begin at the chapel at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Cross Catholic Church 126 High St on Friday, August 31, beginning at 10:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest immediately following the mass at Holy Cross Cemetery in Santa Cruz, beside his beloved wife, Nancy.

Any kind acts of charity may be made to Grey Bears, Boy Scouts of America or St. Francis Soup Kitchen. Those wishing to attend the services are kindly asked to don a hat in memory of Doc, as his trademark was easily recognized by his sporting of a hat.
