BILLIE W. SCHAUMBERG AUGUST 27, 1925 - OCTOBER 7, 2016 Billie W. Schaumberg, 91, died in Santa Fe, October 7, 2016. Born August 27, 1925 in Lake Providence, LA to Robert Freeland Wagley and Daisy Carter Wagley, she attended LSU and came to Santa Fe in 1948 after graduation with degrees in history and education. After a brief stint working in Los Alamos, she hired on with the state Education Department where she did secretarial work and helped choose textbooks. She met Joseph Schaumberg in Santa Fe at the Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he was acting president. They married in 1950 and raised four children. They ran Coronado Optical for nearly half a century as well as Aztec Optical, Santa Fe Optical, and Santa Fe Optical Industries. Billie was an avid bridge player and belonged to multiple bridge groups. When she first arrived in Santa Fe she joined the American Association of University Women and was a member for 30 years, working with capable and interesting women who would become lifelong friends. The work they did made Santa Fe a better place to live today. In the 1960a they started the first recycling program in Santa Fe because the city landfill was overflowing with trash. After running the recycling program for several years they ultimately turned it over to the city. In her retirement years Billie was in a sewing club and a docent at the Palace of the Governors. Learning more about the history of New Mexico was a major interest. She loved to read. Billie was predeceased by her parents, husband Joseph, son Paul, sisters Margie Logan, Bobbie Wagley, and Sally Draper, and brother Buddy Wagley. She is survived by her children, Jean Schaumberg of Santa Fe; Peg Philmon (Tim) of Dade City, FL; and Mark Schaumberg (Nichole) of Santa Fe; grandchildren Ryan Philmon (Betsy) of Greenville, SC; Meg Philmon Vogler (Tim) of Charleston, SC; Marcos Schaumberg (partner Janelle) of Rio Rancho, NM; and Nicholette Pina (Daniel) of Santa Fe, NM; greatgranchildren Lowry Philmon, Tamaryn Vogler, Jordan Pina, and Ayana Pina; sister Pat Craig ; brother Ken Wagley; many nieces and nephews. The family expresses their thanks to Ambercare Hospice and Brookdale Santa Fe who helped care for Billie. A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday, October 21, 10:00 AM, at the gravesite at Rosario Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we suggest a donation to the charity of your choice.
