Deborah Huckabey Obituary

Deborah Colleen Huckabey

March 7, 1950 - November 3, 2023

Nipomo - Deborah Colleen Huckabey, maiden name Curtis, was born on 07 March 1950 in Montreal, Canada to her parents, James William Curtis (deceased) and Betty Shirley Bowers-Thompson (deceased). Debbie 's family migrated to California in 1967, which eventually led to her establishing a long-time residency in San Luis Obispo County. Debbie died peacefully in the comfort of her home on 03 November 2023 in Nipomo, CA at the age of 73.

Following a trialsome youth, marriage & divorce, and raising beloved children and grandchildren, whom she adored dearly, Debbie began to study the Bible in search of comfort from the pains caused by life's difficulties. In February of 2001, Debbie was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and she remained a faithful, zealous Christian minister until the time of her death. Her "spiritual family" came to mean so much to Debbie, and they loved her in return. In her congregation, and within her surviving family, Debbie was well known for being loving, generous, and caring. While reminiscing over their experiences with Debbie, some of her friends described her as generous, giving, sincere, intelligent, resourceful, passionate, compassionate, strong, determined, large-hearted, and loving. She seemed to care deeply about everyone, no matter their station in life, nor their connection or lack thereof with her. Debbie had a deep love for animals, and found great joy in feeding wild birds. Debbie cultivated a deep love for God's Word, the Bible. When someone would read a scripture to her to offer comfort, she would often finish it verbally, sight unseen, for she knew her Bible very well, and from cover to cover. Near the end of her life, Debbie declared that her favorite song was "Just Around the Corner", a song about the Bible's promise of a wonderful future for the Earth and the human family.

Throughout her life, Debbie made countless friends and acquaintances. She would quickly befriend anyone: fellow Christians, passersby, clinical and in-home caregivers, just about anyone kind enough to say hello, and in spite of her serious health challenges. However, there are a few people that stood out in Debbie's life as lasting, close, and cherished friends who went out of their way to support and comfort her. Among them are Jody Kovich, an important and dear friend since youth; Pete Sr. & Pete Jr. Melero and family, Debbie's kind and supportive landlord, who regularly made sure that Debbie had a home to return to when poor health made it seem unlikely that she would ever return; Jody Hilker, a close friend and fellow Jehovah's Witness; and one who proved to be more than a friend was her brother, Rod Curtis, who stewarded Debbie's healthcare and material needs with ardor and grace for many years; and David Stoneburner, a more recent friend, who worked with his wife and the local congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses to provide Debbie with spiritual comfort and encouragement.

Our friend and family member, Debbie, is survived by her daughter Rebecca Dawn Castillo, son Robert Carlton Huckabey, brother Rod Charles James Curtis, grandchildren Christopher & Andrew Galindo, and Erik-David and MacKenzie Huckabey. Debbie was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

I had the pleasure of transporting Deborah to her appointments. We always laughed and listen to doo-op. We both loved music from 40's-60's. She always said turn it up. I did.

A misdialed number from Deb while at Marian was the start to years of "misdialed friendship" calls. Deb loved to chat! She loved her family! I will miss those misdialed calls and Deb style voicemails.
May she rest in peace!
