Sylvia Stone Obituary

Sylvia Mae Stone

May 13, 1927 - May 27, 2023

Santa Maria - Sylvia Mae Stone of Santa Maria passed on May 27, 2023. She was born May 13, 1927, in Ellsinore, Missouri, and attended school there as well as in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1942 she married John Robert Stone. They were married for 71 years and raised four children.

Sylvia loved being an Air Force wife, moving and setting up housekeeping at different airbases, and participating in the Air Force social activities. Of all the places she lived, England was her favorite. She lived in England twice and she and John made many friends there. They frequently traveled back after John's retirement. Each visit was like a homecoming to her.

They moved to Santa Maria in 1968 where she volunteered at school activities such as PTA, overseeing book fairs, and serving as a volunteer librarian. She was involved in Camp Fire Girls and was a leader for seven years. She served as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church on Cook Street and was an active member of Heritage Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. She was a member of the Minerva club for more than 20 years. She also joined John in his activities at Shriner's and the Masonic Lodge and was involved with Eastern Star. Her hobbies included traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, knitting, sewing, shopping, and cooking. Sylvia loved baking pies and baked cakes for the Central Coast Men's Rescue Mission until her last days.

She is survived by sister Jewell Walther, sons Michael (Ashia) of Arizona and David (Diana) of Colorado, daughter Susan Wheeler (Don), and daughter-in-law Andrea Stone Alldredge, as well as by 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and many beloved nephews, nieces, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings "Buzz," Ron, and Mary Ellen, as well as by husband John, youngest son Mark Robert, and son-in-law Daniel Wheeler.

Among her final words were, "Love each other and love God. I'll be waiting for you."

Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 am, Friday, June 2, 2023, at Heritage Church, 4799 Bradley Road, Orcutt.
