Julie was a special person in my life. We worked together several times in the conference room during the Walk To Emmaus. We enjoyed each other's company so much. She wore this beautiful eyeglass holder around her neck. How I loved that eyeglass holder. One day she just took it off and gave it to me. That was the kind of person she was. I gave her necklace to someone special who admired it when I had it on. I shared that a special friend had given that to me, and I must pass it on to them. Heaven is a much better place today because Julie is there sharing her kindness and caring spirit. I will miss her when I sing those praise songs to God at Emmaus. She truly touched my life in a special way.

I met Julie only once at the WTOC Christmas dinner, but in that short few hours she really touched my heart with her kindness, and as Walter and I prepared to leave she gave me the biggest hug and whispered "Girl you Rock!". We had shared the dance floor doing the Electric Slide. I know she slide into Heaven just as easily as she slide into my heart. She was a beautiful Angel.

I love Julie. I loved her smile. The Holy Spirit radiated in everything she said and did. I always wanted to be more like her...loving, giving, kind and non- judgemental. She pulled a gift for me out of her purse one day..and I was so touched...What a wonderful gift she was to me. I will sorely miss her.

To Mrs Marie Backus Mcghaughey and Mrs Jean Smith Conrade,

Had not gotten to see julie so much after we left savannah 23 years ago, but when I did, it was as if we just picked up from where we left off.

Saw her at Spanky's and she took me over to meet her mom's new husband. Always thinking of the other person.

She will be missed terribly.

Wish I could do something for all of you. You will be in my thoughts.

Julie of the huge smile. And in later years, sitting two rows in front of us at church, Julie in a beautiful rainbow striped blouse, with a huge smile. That is how I remember her. We were cheerleaders at SCDS in those days of wide, swirling skirts and too heavy white letter sweaters. I recall that my mother, who was teaching at the school at that time, said she was an outstanding math student. Being gorgeous, "peppy" and smart, Julie was a model for so many girls in those days of early Beatles and late Elvis. But she always had a deep, thoughtful and quiet side too. I remember the day she and a classmate walked the many miles from her home to SCDS. I do not recall the classmate's full name (Johnny?) or why they walked that day (some early "protest" or just to see if they could do it?). Many years later, I learned that she was a Chatham County Commissioner and that she ran marathons to boot. Still gorgeous, "committed" and smart. All of us who ever came in contact with Julie will miss her terribly. I want her family to know how much she was loved and respected. My prayers and thoughts of the imponderable sadness of her death are with you.
Most sincerely,
Christian Schley

To The Family of my Friend Julie

I first met Julie in 1999 when she was in my Bible Study Fellowship Group. She was a special blessing to me with her quiet and sweet spirit.

I am sadden by her death and pray that you will find peace and comfort in remembering her life and the many contributions she made to you and to our community.

May the love of her Savior Jesus Christ give you the strength you need for the days ahead.

To the family of my friend, Julie Backus Smith:

Ever since I met her, Julie has been nothing short of a huge encouragement to me. Her service, kind words and smile will never be forgotten.

While I am confused and don't understand why this occurred, I pray that you may find understanding, peace and comfort in the only one that can give it.
