Daniel P. Showan, 92, of Lock Haven, died Wednesday at The Gatehouse Hospice in Williamsport.
He was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Frackville, a son of the late Joseph and Anna Chowansky.
On Sept. 18, 1948, he married Lois E. Showan, who predeceased him.
Daniel was a history professor, having graduated from Frackville High School, New Britain State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies, The University of Connecticut with a Master's of Arts in History and from The Pennsylvania State University with a Ph.D. in History. He worked in Connecticut and in Pennsylvania, most recently at Lock Haven University for more than 29 years, retiring in 1988.
He was honorably discharged from the Army, where he served from 1944 until 1945 as a demolition specialist and anti-aircraft artillery crewman, and had been a member of the Lock Haven American Legion and served as adjutant.
Daniel served on PSEA's Higher Education Board of Directors as president and served as president of APSCUF, where he received a Distinguished Service Award in 1985.
He was a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ and, since 1959, an active member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Lock Haven. Dan had also been a volunteer at the Piper Museum. He enjoyed spending time with family, hunting and fishing, especially at Lake Mer Bleu in Canada.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean D. (Les) Payne, Pottsville; three sons, David P. (Penny), Mill Hall, Donald M. (Candy), Rote, and Paul S. (Toni), Spring, Texas; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Luke's United Church of Christ, 1174 W. Fourth St., Lock Haven, PA 17745, with Pastor DiAnn Baxley officiating. Family and friends will be received in the church one hour prior to the services. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Piper Museum, St. Luke's United Church of Christ or the charity of choosing through the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home & Cremation Services LLC., 121 W.
