Anna Helen McDonald, 85, of Kaska, passed away Thursday at Schuylkill Center.

Born Feb. 8, 1933, in Middleport, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Blanche Pitkus Bubel.

She was a wife of a veteran, mother of four and grandmother of four. She was a member of the International Poets Hall of Fame and is an International Ambassador of Poetry. In 1977, McDonald was nominated for Poet of the Year and she has received five Poet of Merit Awards.

She was honored to be the poet chosen to speak of the dedication of the Korean War Memorial in Washington, and she has spoken at various other veterans' functions, including the Unofficial Korean War memorial in Berwick. She also received the Ruby Award for American Veterans.

Her poetry and articles appeared in several magazines including AMVETS and several Lithuanian magazines. Her "Plea for Freedom for Lithuania" was broadcast over Radio Free Europe and she was recognized by former PA Governor Richard Thornburg for her "Our Pennsylvania." In recognition of "Schuylkill County," she was declared the area's poet laureate.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas McDonald III, on June 24, 1978.

Anna is survived by her husband of 65 years, Thomas McDonald Jr., Kaska; sons, Edward Kevin McDonald, Kaska, Brian McDonald and wife, Virginia, Schuylkill Haven; daughter, Susanne, wife of Gregory Abbott, Irmo, S.C.; grandchildren, Rebecca Ann Brown and husband, Andy, Jacqueline McDonald, Brian McDonald and David McDonald.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, New Philadelphia, with the Rev. Ronald J. Minner as celebrant. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Thomas J. Bartashus Funeral Home, New Philadelphia.
