Capt. Jones Obituary

June 2, 2014

Capt. Jason Benjamin Jones, commander of the 12-man Special Forces A-Team (known as an Operational Detachment-Alpha) was killed in action Monday near Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

Jason spent his childhood in Orwigsburg, graduating with honors from Blue Mountain High School in 2003. He was a scholar athlete, earning eight varsity letters. He was nominated for First Team All-American Soccer in the Eastern Region and First Team All-State Soccer in 2002. He was co-captain of the Blue Mountain Basketball team for the 2002-03 season, finishing 30-1 and reaching the state quarter-finals.

Jason graduated from West Point Military Academy, sixth in his class in 2007, earning a degree in nuclear engineering. He was captain of his Sandhurst Military Skills Team and earned a Master of the Sword Physical Fitness Award.

While serving in the Army, he was a graduate of the Army Infantry Officer Basic Course in 2007, Army Ranger School and Army Airborne School in 2008. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his performance during deployment to Iraq in 2008-09.

As a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, Jason earned the Iron Panther Award. He graduated Army Jumpmaster School in 2010. He completed the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC) in May 2013 to join the ranks of the Army Special Forces, known as the Green Berets.

In his personal life, Jason married Amy, whom he loved with all his heart. The wedding ceremony for Capt. Jason Jones and Dr. Amy Weniger was celebrated at West Point on June 15, 2013. They resided in Chapel Hill, N.C., with their rescue dog, Molly.

Jason was an avid fisherman and was extremely proud of his new boat. Jason and Amy loved the outdoors and sports, particularly the Philadelphia Eagles. They also enjoyed taking Molly to the dog park and running together.

He was preceded in death by his loving uncle, Greg Jones; and his grandfather, Marven Kaberle.

In addition to his wife, Amy, Jason is survived by his father, Attorney Jay Jones, Pottsville; his mother, Suzy Jones, Orwigsburg; sister, Dr. Lizzy Jones; grandparents, Joseph and Grace Jones, and grandmother, Carol Kaberle. He is also survived by 12 cousins, five aunts, four uncles and countless friends.

Jason was a fun-loving, compassionate and genuine person. We admire him greatly for his courage, humility and dedication to our country. Jason will be forever missed and loved by us all.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 330 W. Market St., Pottsville, with the Rev. Bradley Schutt officiating. Guests will be received by the family from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Interment in West Point will be held early next week. The family request contributions in Jason's honor be sent to Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org and the Animal Protection Society of Durham, 2117 E. Club Blvd., No. 101, Durham, NC 27704. Lord-Bixler Funeral Home Inc., Pottsville, is honored to be entrusted with Jason's arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.lordbixler.com.

To the Jones Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Jason was such a fine young man. I had the good fortune to announce the Eagles BB games and as such to get acquainted with the players. No one stands out in my mind as much a Jason has. He was just an outstanding young man, he always addressed me as Mr. Schmit. I am having a tough time believing that Jason is gone. I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to Jason's family. God God bless all of you.

Today, as I drove home to Ct, from my childhood birthplace in Schuylkill county Pa, ( Buck Mountain), along Interstate. 81 N, I noticed fire trucks doing , what I thought was a drill, on the overpasses of 81N, but then, realized what I was witnessing. I was privileged to be a citizen who was fortunate to be one who could fall in line and pay respect to a fallen soldier who was being honored along his journey to a new resting place in an Honarable Home where he now must rest. My eyes watered as I imagined how his family, and his young wife would experience what I was observing, and my heart went out to them, as it is now, as I try to capture this moment in words. I can only share these words as a consolation, that have afforded me comfort, " We are not human beings having a spiritual expereince we are spiritual beings having a human experience." Pierre Teilhard DeChardin French Jesuit ( 1881-1955). My deep and heartfelt sympathy is with with all of you. Elizabeth Barney

June 12, 2014

Jay, Suzy, and Lizzie, words could never express how sorry we are at your loss. Jason was a wonderful young man. I've told people who didn't know him that he was one of the greatest students I've ever known. And that's not just a nice thing to say in condolence. He really was. I still remember asking him, when discussing SAT's in 10th grade, what he wanted to do. You know his answer. I remember thinking then, "Wow. He could do anything with his academic ability and drive. That's awesome that he wants to serve." As I've learned of all his accomplishments since his enlistment, I'm struck even more so that he chose service over self. Jason would have been successful at anything he decided to do. I'm sure that fly fishing shop would have drawn people from far and wide. But Jason was "called" to serve and loved doing it. And he followed the calling. And that's something to be proud of. We will never understand, this side of Heaven, why he isn't here with his loved ones anymore. But his spirit, his humility, his service, and his sacrifice can be a lasting message to this world about what's really important. I pray that, in time, God will give you all some idea of how to carry on with everyday life, but also how to carry on Jason's memory, so that others will know him and know what he stood for. The world needs more people who value the things Jason valued. I am beyond blessed to have known him and taught him. My kids and my friends who didn't know him now know a lot about him. More people need to know.
A distant friend connected me with a mother who lost her daughter in Afghanistan. She said to give you her info and you can contact her at any you'd like. Her name is Paula Carruth Desroche and she's on facebook.
Our family, and so many others, will be praying for you all. Praying the healing comfort of Christ over your lives, over Jason's wife and friends. We can't imagine the pain, but we know Who can ease it, every so slowly. May you continue to find peace in the knowledge that Jason died doing something he loved, and in his typical selfless nature. We are forever grateful.

June 12, 2014

Dear Suzy, Jay, and Lizzy,
My heart is broken to learn of Jason's passing. (Do you remember me, Lizzy??;) I was your sitter when you were little. ) I remember a very energetic and passionate little boy who loved Ninja turtles energetically running around and it is obvious Jason became an amazing young man and skilled soldier as such! It is not a surprise that Jason became such a wonderful, human being. He was just that from the get-go with such a beautiful and loving family. You are all in my prayers at this time. I hope that, somehow, you might find comfort in remembering that pure joy and love that I witnessed in Jason as a small child. It appears to me that this is what he sought to give this world. God bless you. Godspeed, Jason <3.

Captain Benjamin Jones gave his life to serve our nation and a country in need of assistance. Many Americans are great patriots while others take their freedom and the sacrifice of Capt.Jones and the thousands of brave young soldiers who died or sustained wounds for granted. There is a song written by Radney Foster and sung by Darius Rucker that pays tribute to our fallen heros titled "Angel Flight". No family should experience the pain of receiving their beloved son and loved one from an Angel Flight mission. Sincere condolences to the entire Jones Family for the loss of a true American Hero.

As I read Jason's obituary, I realized that not only did your family lose someone special, America lost a true hero. I am not sure how you go on after losing a child, but I do know that keeping Jason's memory alive is what will help you get through these dark days. Speak of him often, share all of the stories, laugh, cry, and find some peace in the fact that there is a special place in heaven for him. Your family lost a son, brother, husband.
