Very sad to learn of Derek’s passing. Although now several years ago, I got to know Derek well through his bringing many pupils from East Lothian to Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Learning, by Kincraig. A keen hillwalker, Derek’s love for the outdoors was I am sure inspirational to many of the young people in his charge. I am certain my Lagganlia colleague who knew Derek would join me in sending condolences to Derek’s Family, with all good wishes for their future.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Derek. Derek was a great friend of mine in the mid to late 70's. I remember many good times in the Justinlees Inn, Eskbank most weekends and had a few hill climbing expeditions with him.
The last time I saw Derek was at his 60th birthday celebration and although I had not seen him for over 30 years he hadn't changed a bit and it was like time had stood still. Our lives took different directions but it was the same Derek.

RIP Derek, I wish I had kept in touch a bit more.

I worked with Derek at Ross High School. He’d often chat about outdoor learning and share advice on the school garden. A lovely, friendly man. I’m sorry to hear he’s passed, condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace Derek.

Derek was a great friend and colleague at Ross High for over 30 years. I've fond memories of a ski trip to Italy in the late 80s and, more recently, trips to Sicily and the Alps. His nurturing of many troubled young people will be his legacy in the community. He was always there for all of us. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Derek was more than a colleague and friend to me. He just knew the right thing to say when you needed support. I worked with him for many years at Ross High and even went on one of the legendary watersports trips to France. He will be sadly missed by so many. My love and thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
