George knew my mother, Audrey Swaffield and her brothers, John, Richard(Dick) and her sister Olive who lived near him in Fulbridge Road, Peterborough from Deacon's School days and up to the 1970's. On visits to Peterborough he used to call in for a chat and cup of tea. Audrey also stayed with George and Joyce on a visit to Edinburgh before he retired.

George Shepperson, known from his Army days as "Sam," taught a course I took at Edinburgh University in 1954-1955. He was a great teacher, whose lectures were filled with great insight and a droll sense of humor that captivated all of us in the hall. When two of my friends, Fred Hadden and Elliott Woodburn, fellow Yanks, died on Ben Nevis in May 1955, "Sam" and his wife Joyce helped the three survivors of our group from Stanford (John Binns, Thomas Flattery, and me) through the initial stages of grieving, arranged the memorial service at St. Giles. and somehow kept a light burning in the darkness. In later years it came as a surprise to me when I belatedly realized that some of my professional work owed a great debt to the wonderfully intelligent, kind, and decent man who gave those splendid lectures at Edinburgh so many years ago. May he rest in peace.

Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. I am sorry that present circumstances prevent us from attending George's cremation but hope we will be able to join you at his memorial service. He achieved a great deal in his life but never forgot his roots in Peterborough. I will always remember his kindness to Daphne while she was at Longueville Court. Fred also sends his condolences and remembers George as one of the very brightest students of the Kings School in Peterborough.

With love and best wishes
