John coached College Football at St. John's University for 60 years and Carroll College, Helena, MT for 4 years. John felt it was more important to be "interested than interesting."

In lieu of flowers make an effort to do what was effortless for John: compliment your spouse often, listen intently to others and see the best in all.

Dear Peg and Family,KesEf

I am Elaine (Bells) sister, Julie. I know if she was still with us, she would have sent her sincere sympathy to you and your family. She always spoke so fondly of you and John and enjoyed sharing Christmas cards throughout the years.
Our Entire Bell family from Cold Spring has followed John and his career while at St. Johns. He has left such a wonderful legacy! And most importantly he was such a good man!!!

We have stayed connected with St. Johns through the years through Pete and Joyce Cheeley. Joyce is my husband Bobs sister.

May care and concern of all those close to you get you through this time.

Our Sympathy.
Bob and Julie(Bell)Manuel

PS: My sister Barb ((Bell) Walz also sends her sympathy.

My dad, Frank Farrington, met John when he first came to St. Cloud. Dad was Sports Editor at the St. Cloud Times at the time and he and Dad became good friends. We actually had a good visit with John at St. John's when Dad was 100 in 2008. John will always be legendary at St. John's. He was a great coach, a great friend, and a truly "Good" man. Peggy was in nurse's training when I was in xray tech training. We had a "Religion" class with Fr. Riley together. Dad told me that John asked his advice about getting married when he was just beginning his coaching job. Dad told him it would be a big plus to be married! My love and hugs are with Peg and the family. I am so sorry we can't get to St. John's for the funeral, but know that you are in our hearts and prayers! Bev Farrington Chirhart My husband, Duane sends his love too!

Want to send my prayers and thoughts on the loss of John. He was a wonderful man and gave so much himself to others. A special prayer for you, John, we shared a great January Term in Europe oh though many years ago. have periodically revisited the pictures from the trip. You share stories of your father which show ed the love and respect you had for him.
Again, my prayers and thoughts go out to the entire family.

I never met him, but he was the greatest football coach ever! You could see it in the he treated his team. His kindness showed inside and out.

Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. May you find comfort from God. Your husband /dad/grandpa/friend will be in your heart forever.

He will be missed.

John had an impact on so many lives, including mine. He taught so much in everything he did. The coaching profession has lost one of its greatest, not only in terms of on the field success, but more importantly in terms of building men of great character.
God Bless, Peggy and the entire family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

From Greg Schneider class of 70. Even though we dressed 109 guys John still could remember you even when I went to homecoming 24 years later. He will be missed. From his quick whit to his unbeleive knowledge of the game he loved. Rest In Peace John. Maybe God will want to see some of the highlight films.

John was an outstanding coach and more important a good man for his family and friends as well as SJU
I had the honor of being the first athletic trainer for John and the football team (and other sports) starting in the Fall of 1955. Prior to that other student athletes did the best they could for other student athletes. Had many treasured and memorable times with John and the team....he was considerate of my limited training and took 98% of my ideas even when we had no Doctor at the games, etc. Good times...I will never forgot those times, with John, Peggy, ball players and many monks. Life has many opportunities to meet and know good or great people, John was among them. May he rest in peace with Our Lord.
