Paul Hughes Obituary

GREENLAND, N.H. – Paul F. Hughes of Greenland passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. A Greenland native, he was the son of the late Paul C. and Anna (Leary) Hughes.

Paul was a graduate of Portsmouth High School (1950), Phillips Exeter Academy (1951) and Boston College (1959). He also attended Harvard University.

He was employed by radio stations WKXL (Concord) and WTSN (Dover) from 1954 to 1958.

In 1959 he joined the National Security Agency, retiring in 1991. While living in the Washington area, he coached softball and basketball at various levels.

With his parents, Paul was a founding member of the Greenland Historical Society. Through the years, Paul and his father began research on the history of the Town of Greenland, accumulating historical records and other information on the town. Living in the Washington area, he consulted sources at the Univ. of Maryland, Library of Congress, and the National Archives. This information was pooled with information that his parents found in New Hampshire libraries.

After retirement, Paul finished research for and wrote "A Pleasant Abiding Place," a typescript history of Greenland from 1635 through 2000. He also wrote articles for "Historical New Hampshire" and Greenland's annual reports and spoke at the Historical Society and elsewhere on historical subjects.

He is survived by several cousins, including Robin C. Hughes of Greenland, Carolyn H. Marshall of Hudson, N.H., Bette C. Owens of Stratham, and Donna L. Stowell of Roseville, Calif.

Services will be private. If desired, donations in Paul's memory can be made to the Weeks Public Library, P.O. Box 430, Greenland, NH 03840.

So sad to hear about Paul. We did genealogy studies together over the years, helping each other fill in gaps. His Christmas card each year came faithfully after we moved from Greenland. My condolences to his family. He was a wonderfully brilliant man. He will be missed.
