Grace Chandler Hannigan Obituary
KITTERY POINT, Maine - Grace Chandler Hannigan, of Goodwin Road in Kittery Point, Maine, died peacefully surrounded by family on September 13, 2016, at York Hospital. Born on January 26, 1924, at her home on Love Lane Extension in Kittery, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Helen (Paterson) Chandler.

She attended local schools, including the Wentworth Dennett School right next to her home and RW Traip Academy. She earned a degree in physical education at the University of New Hampshire, where she enjoyed field hockey and basketball.

After college Grace taught anatomy at a girls school in Briarcliff, New York. She married Judson Hannigan of Kittery Point in 1946. While he attended Dartmouth College, Grace worked as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse near Hanover.

Upon his graduation, they settled in Corinth, New York, where they raised a growing family. She continued her love of sports through bowling and playing golf. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, with her many friends.

Later, the family moved to a suburb of New York City where she guided her six children through a multitude of sports, music, religious, and academic activities en route to them graduating from college. Amidst the flurry of these motherly duties, she found the time to volunteer regularly at a consignment store for a community hospital and to participate on the St. Andrews Golf Club curling team that competed throughout the New York and New England.

Grace and Jud retired to a lovely house in Kittery Point where they enjoyed an oceanfront view. She later moved to the Sentry Hill Retirement Community in York Harbor, Maine, where she had wonderful relationships with fellow residents, caregivers, and employees.

Grace is survived by her loving family -- sons Michael Hannigan and his wife Betty Jo of Rye, New York; Timothy Hannigan and his wife Mary of Oakton, Virginia; Patrick Hannigan and his wife Albina of Tuxedo, New York; Francis Hannigan and his wife Debra of York, Maine; Daniel Hannigan and his wife Bonnie of Kittery Point. She also is survived by 23 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews as well as her son-in-law, William Frye. Her loving husband, Judson, and their daughter, Kathryn Hannigan Frye, predeceased Grace in 2008. She was also predeceased by her parents and five siblings: Mary, Paul, Ruth and Earl Chandler and Doris Cricenti.
