Shirle Mae Hartley Obituary
Shirle Mae Hartley

After losing Dad three weeks earlier, our sweet mom is together again with her "Hubby Bud". Shirle was born on December 9th, 1929 as the third child of Emmett Cobb and Mae Louella (Kay) Mathews in Wenatchee. During her school years her family resided in Grayland, Washington; Williston, North Dakota; Seattle and back in Wenatchee where she graduated from high school in 1948 and Wenatchee Junior College in 1950. She attended Central Washington University and graduated in 1952 with a degree in business education and received a teaching certificate.

She did not have an opportunity to use the teacher's credentials because in 1952 she married Lt. Marvin Hartley and became an Air Force wife. She did use her office skills as a civilian Air Force secretary and later at several business positions and finally for nearly twenty years at the University of Washington, from which she retired in 1990.

Shirle always felt that her greatest life achievements were her three children: Sherrie, Camille and Gregory, each of whom has provided many opportunities to glow (a lot) and brag (a little). She also cherished her only granddaughter, Stephanie. Shirle always worked outside home so the kids could have music and ski lessons and great vacation trips. Mom loved all the holidays, family birthdays, anniversaries, and football games, for an opportunity to decorate and celebrate. She also loved to travel by auto, plane and ship. She visited forty eight of the fifty states (she missed Oklahoma and West Virginia) and foreign lands - her favorite being Ireland, the home of some ancestors.

Shirle was preceded in death by her loving sweetheart of 63 years, Marvin - who passed away just 26 days prior to her. Also preceding her death in were her parents and brothers Dick & Cobb. She is survived by her beloved granddaughter, Stephanie Heck, daughters Sherrie Heck (Steve), and Camille Hartley, and son, Greg Hartley.

Please join the family to celebrate the lives of both Shirle and Marvin on March 14th, 1:00 PM, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Seattle. The family requests that if you wish to honor Shirle, kindly make contributions to Seattle Children's Hospital.
