David Hayward Obituary

David Charles Hayward

David Charles Hayward was born October 6, 1943 in San Francisco to John Hayward and Frances Leighton.

David was a man of integrity; loyal to family and friends alike. Mechanically inclined from an early age, he shared his aptitude for fixing cars and home repairs to help others. He had a stewardship attitude, favoring caring for what he had rather than buying new. David was an innovative thinker, skilled at improvising when he didn't have the right tools for a job. One of David's interests was restoring antique pocket watches. He retired from Metro as a lead mechanic in 2011 after 26 years.

Some of David's fondest memories were experienced on a ranch in Sonora, California near Yosemite. There he worked alongside his father, helping raise turkeys and developing a strong work ethic. David lost his father, who was also his best friend at the age of 16, but continued to live and work on the ranch under the care of his aunt and uncle.

At 18, David joined the Army, went to Europe, and became a crane operator. While there, he traveled extensively, eventually meeting his future wife, Jacqueline in Orleans, France. Throughout life, David made several trips to France to see French Family. He loved visiting the Loire Valley, including the chateaux and museums of the region.

David enjoyed giving his children, grandchildren, and friends, memorable experiences. These adventures usually involved a boat trip to Eastern Washington for waterskiing and camping. David also took great care of his mother, Frances in her older years. He defied the norm when he took her to the Grand Canyon and Oregon Coast well into her 80's and 90's.

David is survived by his loving wife Jacqueline of 51 years; sons Paul and Marc of Seattle; daughter and son-in-law Florence and Dale McFarlin of Juneau, AK; grand-children, Jourdain, Amanda, Alex, Olivia, Fiona, and Zhuji. He is also survived by his cousin and friend, Michael Graham of Portland, Oregon.

David passed away October 30, 2018. His loving presence will be forever missed. His family is grateful to Evergreen Hospice for their compassion and loving care.
