Dennis Donohue Obituary

Dr. Dennis M. DONOHUE Died at Harborview Hospital on March 30 from a sudden illness. He was born in Dayton, Washington in 1924 to Mabel Warren Donohue and Dennis M. Donohue, Sr. He graduated from Whitman College after naval service during World War II. He was a member of the second graduating class of the University of Washington School of Medicine, receiving his M.D. with honors in 1951. He served his internship at the University Hospital in Minneapolis, his residency at King County Hospital in Seattle; and from 1953 to 1956 he was a fellow in hematology at the UW. He was a founding partner of the Minor and James medical practice and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University. Leaving private practice, he was named Director of the King County Central Blood Bank in 1967. Under his leadership, the blood center grew to serve 8 counties in the Puget Sound region. In 1979, Dennis was named Director of the Division of Blood and Blood Products at the Bureau of Biologics, a division of the FDA in Bethesda, Maryland. Dennis married Gail Selle in 1947. They moved to Mercer Island in 1955, where they raised their five children. They retired to Vashon Island in 1978. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gail Selle Donohue, his children Laura (Vic) Miller of University Place, Annie, Patrick and Shannon of Seattle and Michael (Mary) of St. Thomas, USVI, his grandchildren Jessica, Jennifer, Sean, Kayla, Stephen, Aaron and Joseph and his beloved sloop, The Irish Rose. His sisters, Patricia Erickson and Donna Berto and a large and loving family of cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the state also survive him. Services to be held at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Vashon Island on Saturday, April 5th at 1 p.m. Donations may be made to: The Glen Nysoe Memorial Fund, c/o Cindy Donohue 638 Wagon Road, Dayton, WA 99328.
