Douglas Phillip Haner

Douglas Phillip HANER Douglas Phillip Haner died peacefully on November 29, 2011 in Shoreline, WA at the age of 81. After earning architecture degrees from the University of Washington and Harvard, he had a varied career including buildings in eight states. In the '60s he lived in Rome, where he designed buildings for Iraq, Tunisia, Lagos, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Turkey, Italy and Germany. He worked on houses, schools, colleges, inns, hospitals, office buildings, a factory, an airmail facility, and even a mosque. Among his awards was First Prize in the Mt. Olympus Architectural Competition for the Design of a Residence, an international competition. In 1973 he returned to the Seattle area, where he was responsible for a variety of projects, including the School of Social work/Speech and Hearing Sciences building for the University of Washington. For the Seattle School district he managed a capital improvement program encompassing 16 schools, and for King County Facilities Planning he managed projects concerning the Kingdome and Pioneer Square. He loved classical music and played the piano every day. A devoted gardener and bird watcher, he loved fishing with his brother Greg, who predeceased him. He loved repairing antique clocks, and he built an incredible model train set. Late in life he researched the family genealogy. His wife, Barbara, their son David, and grandson Charlie survive him.
