Frederic Lyman Obituary

Frederic Pomeroy LYMAN, III Fred was born June 9, 1927 in Kansas City, MO., the son of Frederic P. Lyman, Jr. and Amalia Patridge Lyman. The family moved to Vancouver, B.C., then Seattle where Fred graduated from Lakeside School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and received a BA and Masters of Architecture from Yale University. He worked for severl architectural firms incuding Neutra & Alexander in Los Angeles, then opened his own practice there. His work was widely published, particularly his home in Malibu, CA. He was elected President of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects, was a founder of the newspaper LA Architect, and served on the AIA National Board of Directors 1984-1987, later being honored as a Fellow of the AIA. He enjoyed teaching, particularly as Design Critic at Pepperdine University, USC and the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Nostalgic for his mid-Western roots, Fred brought a farm in Minnesota where he developed plans for an architectural school based on designing in harmony with nature, wrote his treatise "The Two Forms of Wealth" and painted. In 2000, he moved to Taos, N.M. A show of his paintings was held at the Parks Gallery there in October 2004. Everyone loved Fred and Fred loved everyone. We will miss his kind and gentle manner, his fresh sense of humor, his amusing and charming Christmas cards, his fondness for Shakespeare, his ability to listen, his wonderful laugh and loving presence. Fred passed away March 1, 2005 in Albuquerque, N.M., predeceased by his parents and grandparents Frederic P. Lyman, Jesse Johnson Lyman, Bishop Sidney Catlin Patridge and Agnes Simpson Patridge. He leaves behind his loving wife Katherine Starke Lyman, sons Timothy Starke Lyman and Thomas Ingham Lyman, sister Laura Ingham Lundgren, brother William Patridge Ingham and grandchildren Christina, Jessica, Kuper, Chad and Chase. Burial Service took place March 8 in Kenosha, WI. A Memorial Service will be held March 19, 2005 at St. James Episcopal Church in Taos. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Avenue, Miami, FL. 33136.
