Gregory Max

Engel, M.D.

Gregory Max Engel, M.D., was born on April 20, 1948, in Seattle, Washington to parents Virginia and August Engel. He was joined eight years later by his little sister, Debbie. Greg's love of baseball flourished at Rainier Beach High School, where he was the star pitcher. He continued his studies at the University of Washington, majoring in Zoology and Oceanography, and his ambidexterity helped him become collegiate handball champion. After college, Greg attended the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he graduated with honors. Greg welcomed his first child, Gregory "Max" in 1977. Two years later, Greg started his private practice, Bellevue Bone and Joint Physicians, where he developed his passion for healing patients while making them his friends. In 1980, Greg's second child, Madeline, was born. Greg continued practicing in Bellevue for 35 years, and served as Chief of Staff at Overlake Hospital from 2009-2010. In 2012, he went on medical leave to undergo a bilateral lung transplant while battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Greg lived many lifetimes in the course of 64 years. He loved to ski on water and snow, he hiked throughout the Cascades, summitted every volcanic peak in the Pacific Northwest, and rode his bike around Mt. Rainier and from Seattle to Portland. Greg adventured all over the world, including fly-fishing in remote Alaska, going on safari in Africa, skiing every resort in the western United States, and SCUBA diving in Fiji, Belize, and the Great Barrier Reef. He also loved his hometown and avidly attended Seattle sporting events with his friends and son, Max. Greg's greatest love, however, was his family, which included his relatives, friends, and patients. He was never happier than when he was helping someone he loved.

Greg passed away on December 6, 2012, due to complications from a bilateral lung transplant. He is survived by his children Gregory "Max" Engel, Jr. (Elisa) and Madeline Engel (Ryan Rourke). Greg's family is so grateful to his care providers at the University of Washington Medical Center, especially his transplant team, physical therapists, and the nursing staff in the cardio-thoracic ICU, all of whom fought alongside Greg for nearly four months.

A service will be held on December 16, 2012 at 3pm at First Presbyterian in Bellevue. In lieu of flowers, condolences can be made to the Gregory Max Engel Memorial Fund at Overlake Hospital.

Almost 3 years since he left us. Hardly a day goes by that I don't smile with some hilarious memory. 19 years of taking X-rays and removing casts and stitches in the office, I compare every job to this one, it was by far the most challenging and the most rewarding I'll ever have. Our patients were our family. How fortunate I was! I loved every one of them.
Greg, not only did you patiently teach me tons about Orthopedics, which is now my true passion, but you allowed me much independence. I'm forever grateful.
You challenged me often and made me laugh always. Your quick wit is so missed.
I know you smile as you watch over those adorable grand babies. And that you're very proud of Max and Madeline.
Til we meet again

Doctor Engel was such a kind man and skillful doctor. I broke my foot in 2007 and he fixed it, no surgery needed. I feel lucky to have met him and forever grateful to be up and running. I remember I was so scared and he had such a upbeat personality that soon I was laughing. I am forever thankful for that. now, Doctor"s big smile is with G-d. RIP -Vlada

I just heard about Dr. Engel's passing from a friend. Its been six years since I left OHMC, . I worked in ICU, & I would see Dr Engel often when he came to see his patients. He fixed my sprained ankle telling me to just come up to the surgery suite. No office call. Just because he was that way. One of nicest Dr's. I had the pleasure to know. I was so sadden to hear of his passing. You will truly be missed. ??

Dr. Engel performed my second knee surgery at Overlake. After I told him of the horror story I had at Steven's, (back then), he surprised me with a private room. This is just one of my pleasant memories of Dr. Engel. I will miss you, Greg!

As the wife of a former patient of Dr. Engel's I am saddened to hear of his passing and am sorry that we were not able to attend his service. He was a caregiver in every sense of the word. Very admirable in his skillset, and very comforting in his kind words to set the patient's mind at ease. He will truly be missed I hope that his family receives comfort knowing how many lives he helped!

Both Linda and I were deeply saddened to hear of Doc Engel's death. Both of us have had multiple surgeries by Greg and have had the best of care each time. My knee replacement is 10 years old as of this August and my recovery was exceptional. Linda had both shoulder and knee surgery, both which were totally outstanding.
Doc had a great, sometimes wry, way about him that made him human and gave patients a great deal of confidence in his expertise. He impacted our lives tremendously and we'll miss him greatly.

We just learned of Greg's passing and felt an instant sadness. He was one of the few doctors we actually looked forward to an having an appointment with. We were most appreciative of his integrity and desire to try the least invasive treatments first. And most importantly, he made us laugh and laugh! His laughter was medicine in itself. We considered him our physician and our friend.

Our deepest sympathy to his children, who of course bear the biggest void.

I was stunned into choking tears when logging on the BB&J website today, to see Dr. Engel's photo flashing with the news that he had passed on. My heart breaks for his two children and their families, that are left without their father, who appears to have had a positive influence on many lives. In 1989 Dr. Engel repaired my ACL blowout and when I returned two years after that to have a meniscus repair, he was very pleased with his work! He was such a cool doctor and I am so very thankful to have known him and that I found him to repair my knee. During my recovery I loved his sense of (dry) humor and to this day can remember his sideways glance with that slight grin on his lips and a twinkle in his eye. When I returned recently, to BB&J office, I was shocked to find out he wasn't there and had been in critical care at UW for months. I regret that I didn't post on his blog so that he could read my words of thanks for all that he did for me. And now that I am facing a double knee replacement, not due to anything that doctor did, of course :), I'm beside myself at who to find to do that for me. It never occurred to me that Dr. Engel wouldn't be there, in that nice little office in Bellevue.... but poof, a dear soul is gone. He will be missed and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family... With Love, Peggy Sue (a former patient and a person that lost a father a year ago)

So very sad to hear of Dr. Engel's passing. My husband and I have been so very fortunate to have been in his care for both of our bi-lateral surgeries and my husband's hip replacement. You will always be in our hearts as the one who really cared about his patients; called after we returned home to see how we were doing and would take that extra few minutes to answer my questions. Our condolences to your family and loved ones. You will be missed.

Greg (aka Dr. Engel) was one of my favorite people. He was always so encouraging and positive, and he always made it clear that he believed in me. He always encouraged me to improve my life, to help my family improve their lives and he made me want to just be better, and I will always appreciate that. I am forever grateful for his kind words and I am quite proud to have known him. He did a lot of good for a lot of people and he will be missed by many, I'm sure - I know I will. My most heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family. All my best to a good man.

Most sincerely,

I first met Greg when our sons played baseball for the Curtis team many years ago. When my poor old knee could handle no more surgeries I turned to Greg for replacement surgery. He changed my life. I was golfing 5 weeks post-op and the envy of every one of my friends who have had replacements since I've had not one day of pain since. He was a genius and with a great sense of humor. We've lost a treasure. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Galloping senility helped me to put the wrong funeral date in my calendar, so I'm sorry to have missed Greg's funeral.
I remember his eager face as he began his residency at UW, and the pleasant task of teaching him (and the process was often reversed) arthroscopy and pediatric orthopedics. After years of collegial association, our last contact was skiing through the trees at Steamboat Springs a few years ago.

From start to finish: a happy, talented guy.

We are deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Dr. Engel's passing. We knew he was having his surgery but thought he was doing ok. We loved his honest, straight to the point, great personality. After years of going to many doctors for my shoulder Dr. Engel was the only one to do surgery to help me. He truely made us feel as though we were friends over the years of seeing him for various pains and surgeries. Dr. Engel did surgery on my daughter after she broke her arm. She went to WSU and rebroke her wrist. He joked with her that someday she needed to come back and confess how it really happened. Loved his funny, caring personality. We will miss him very much. He was a great doctor! Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

We were deeply saddened to read DR. Engle had passed away. He was an amazing doctor as well as a caring man about our family. He would tell other patients when they mentioned how much business their family had given to him he would say well, "there is this other family the Browns" His sense of humor was wonderful. He will be greatly missed by many.

I had the privilege of calling on Dr Engel's clinic as a sales rep from 1999-2004. He was a very respected surgeon, while at the same time displaying a down-to-earth, hilarious personality. I have missed calling on him, and have always considered him a friend. He leaves a very large legacy both personally and professionally, and will be sincerely missed.

I am one of the legions of folks who Greg helped to return to active sports and life after injuries. I first met him in 1980 when he had a new practice in Bellevue and I had recently started to work at Overlake Hospital. Greg did a great job repairing my torn ACL. When I needed surgery to repair a torn ACL on my other knee in 1995, no other doc would do. He was a great doctor - caring, funny and kind. Gone way too soon! Condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.

From my caller ID on my phone
We first met Dr. Engel about 25 years ago when I needed help with a knee which had been injured long ago. He did everything humanly possible to keep me from having to undergo a replacement, but eventually it came to that. Along this path we became good friends, sharing our love of family, and of fly fishing. He continued to care for my wife and I over the years, treating more knees, shoulders, aches, and pains, and we came to look forward to doctor visits if they were with him. What a great legacy he leaves. How he loved his kids, and how proud he was of them. We count ourselves lucky to have known him, and with the certain knowledge that this life is not the end, look forward to the day when we can renew our friendship with him. The world has lost one of the good guys, and there are mighty few of them out there.
