Foreign language teacher and administrator, Lester McKim died peacefully at age 91 on June 21,

2018 in his home in Seattle, Washington. His wife, Melba and daughter, Rita were with him. Lester was born on September 25,

1926 in Lenora, Kansas to Ralph McKim and Hazel Calkins.

At age 21, he earned his high school GED, and after a year at the Oregon College of Education, started taking classes at Central Washington State College. In French class, he discovered his love of foreign languages and the love of his life, Melba. In 1951, Lester and Melba were married and a year later Melba gave birth to the first of their five children, Larry, David, Marcia, Colleen and Rita.

Lester spent 1955 on a Fulbright scholarship studying at the University of Grenoble in France with Melba and their two children. During this year, he studied Stendhal and started his master's thesis in French Literature.

Beginning in 1956, Lester taught for three years in the Seattle Public School district, four years as the foreign language supervisor for the state of Montana, four years as a professor at Central Washington State College, and 15 years as foreign language coordinator and later as Director of Curriculum for the Bellevue Public School district. During the 1970's Lester completed work on his Ph.D. in curriculum and administration at the University of Washington.

For several years toward the end of his life he was involved as a volunteer instructor at the Lifetime Learning Center in north Seattle where he taught poetry, creative writing, French literature and American history.

Lester is survived by his children, listed here with their children and spouses: Larry (Frenchtown, NJ: children: Montana and Cooper, wife: Elizabeth), David (Enumclaw, WA: wife: Mary), Marcia (Seattle, WA, children: Elana and Michaela, husband: Spencer), Colleen (New Haven, CT, children: Connor and Jack, husband, Tom), Rita (Seattle, WA, children: Kenny, Matthew and Michael).
