Maurice Munch Obituary

Maurice Joseph Munch

Maurice ("Mo" to family and friends) died in early January at his Seattle home. He was born on November 23, 1937 to Herman and Irma Munch of Washougal, Washington. He grew up in Washougal, graduating from Washougal High School with the class of 1956. He attended the University of Washington, from which he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1960.

Most of Mo's professional life was with Boeing in Seattle. He also worked for Boeing on its Space Program and with first-astronaut-on-the-moon Neil Armstrong in Huntsville, Alabama. He obtained his Masters Degree while with Boeing in Huntsville.

After some years in Alabama, Mo moved back to his home state of Washington, living in Washougal and working with his father at Munch Electric. Returning to the Seattle area, he lived on acreage in Maple Valley in a home he built himself. He worked for Boeing for the remainder of his career.

Mo had a taste for outdoor activities, among them clamming and oystering, fishing, hiking and mountain climbing, and hunting. He was also an avid golfer.

Surviving Mo are his twin daughters Deana Munch (Abed) and Lisa Heuple; stepchildren Paul Haase, Jill Haase (Kelly), Rebecca Ryker, Debbie Haase (Carson), and Christy Haase; six grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; sisters Gretchen

Ward and Carolyn Dixon (Richard), and brother Louie Munch (JaneAnn). He will be greatly missed by his family and friends as he meant so much to so many.

A celebration of Mo's life will be held on March 26th at the Dolphin Yacht Club in Washougal. Details will be printed two weeks prior. Those wishing to make memorial donations may send them in his name to a conservation or environmental organization of their choice.

Godspeed, Mo - as you head off to your next adventure! Moving here from the Mid-West, I was puzzled by the seafood. Mo not only taught me how to eat it, but how to catch it, dig, it, prepare and appreciate it! Mo could build a fire in a waterfall! Thanks for all the adventures! Mary Wagamon

The one thing that always stood out to me with Mo was his ability to always remember you. While I didn't spend a lot of time with him one on one, the times when we did spend time together at family gatherings, he always knew who I was, and cared about what I was doing. I will always remember Mo as a warm and generous man, and he will be missed.

Times spent with Grandpa Mo were always among my favorite memories, he was always such a happy, genuine and loving man and the memories I have with him always included tons of laughter and joy! I will never forget him and all the happiness he radiated to the world around him, he did so much good for the people he was close to and I will always love him with all my heart. You will be greatly missed!

Mo always shared himself generously with me and the way I live today remains strongly influenced by him. Learning to appreciate and live in nature, that when push comes to shove - integrity matters and prevails, and his kind and patient support lives on with me and my children. You will be missed but not forgotten.

In Huntsville, Mo ran the training simulator for several of the Apollo moon missions and worked with many of the astronauts. He was always proud of that work, his contribution to the moon landings, and joked that it was him characterized in the training scenes of "Apollo 13." He was a patient teacher.

When Mo gave you a hug, he meant it. When he asked how you were doing, he really cared about your reply. Growing up with Mo was always an adventure, from wild huckleberry picking, spending summers camping at Mt. St. Helens (before it erupted), or Sucia Island in the San Juan Islands, from mushroom picking, waking up early to go fishing on opening day, to learning how to garden and appreciate fresh foods, to building a green house. I learned a love and knowledge of the outdoors that few could have offered the way he did. He instilled a respect for nature and was respected for his concern and desire to maintain our parks, forests, and open spaces. He wanted the best for all his family, his children, and helped with big and small matters in each of our lives where he could. He taught us the value of a dollar, the value of honesty, and that a handshake was worth a thousand formal documents. He was rare in today's often superficial world and my hope is we can continue his legacy of care for the environment, and each other. I will always remember how as a young child I called you Moey, and you always replied enthusiastically, "whatey?!" You will be missed! Love, Christy
