Michael Fitzgerald Obituary
Michael Fitzgerald

Mike Fitzgerald's life came to an end on February 23, 2018. Mike was born in Seattle and raised in the Medina area of Bellevue with his sister Patricia. Bellevue was a small town in the 1950's and 1960's. Many of his early years were spent exploring the woods, fields and Lake Washington with childhood friends.

Mike had the spirit of a kind warrior. He found his passion in playing on the gridiron in seventh grade and became determined to make himself the best football player he could. Mike was an inspiration to his fellow classmates at Bellevue High school both before and after a serious brain injury he suffered at a high school football game at Lake Washington High School in 1967. Before his injury, he inspired his teammates by his dedication to training, extraordinary athletic ability, friendliness and a great sense of humor. His athletic abilities, his dedication to hard work and his strength would have likely earned him an all Kingco conference selection and a college scholarship. Mike had dedicated himself to working for a career in professional football.

In his Junior year he became the starting fullback for the Bellevue High School Wolverines. His dreams were shattered while playing a football game under the lights on the gridiron at Lake Washington High School in 1967. After a kickoff play, as everyone returned to the huddle, Mike remained on the ground. Mike suffered a traumatic brain injury. His injury on the gridiron that clear night was the beginning of a new life. Mike had to recreate himself. He did not complain but dedicated himself to his recovery. He amazed his friends and caregivers with his positive attitude and his dedication to regain the strength required to support himself.

Despite challenges, Mike had a successful career at the Bellevue Post Office. The past 9 years Mike resided at Delta Rehab in Snohomish, WA. Mike's inner strength and positive attitude earned him friends and admiration to the very end.

His Bellevue High Classmates will always remember that moment when after a kickoff he remained on the ground as his teammates returned to the huddle. His dream was shattered but his tragic injury served to bind the team, his classmates and the entire school together and let us appreciate how fragile life can be. The rallying cry of our football team before each game as they prepared to take the field was: "Remember Fitz". We will always remember Mike Fitzgerald as a Kind Warrior walking the hallways of Bellevue High School with his Irish smile greeting whomever crossed his path.

Mike was preceded in death by his father Fabian Fitzgerald, his mother Violet Fitzgerald and his sister Patricia Fitzgerald.
