Richard Scarvie Obituary

Richard Hunt Scarvie

Richard (Rick) Hunt Scarvie, lived a full life in his short 64 years. He passed on February 13, 2017. He was a loving family man that is sadly missed. A husband and Best Friend to Sally, a caring and devoted father to Sarah Suppan and Laura Davis, an adored grandfather to Aiyana-15, Ariana-12, Alexander-11, Antonio(Bean)- 18 months, and Thorynn(Smoosh)- 23 months. Rick is also survived by his older brother William Scarvie and wife Karen Scarvie, who Rick loved very much. There are numerous nieces and nephews. Rick was a lead aircraft mechanic and employed at United Airlines for over 3 decades. His passion and expertise stretched to small planes as well as having his pilot's license until recent years. Another of his passions was being involved in Drum and Bugle Corps since 1972 marching with the Seattle Shamrocks. From there he went on to be involved with a number of corps including the Santa Clara Vanguard and Concord Blue Devils of CA. "In his spare time, Rick was also a well beloved crew mate and performer with BOOM Pirates, a Piratically Themed Performance Troupe, for whom his hard work, professionalism, and sense of humor shall be sorely missed."

I still think of Rick, We had something else in common besides Drum Corp, I bumped into him a few times at the Monroe speedway where he worked on a crew. I raced cars at one time and still was a fan. Was good to see him there, and I wasn't surprised that he had the technical ability like that

Rick was a kind and gentle man.
I first met him when I joined the Civil Air Patrol (Tukwila Squadron)
We flew together on many practice, and some
search and rescue missions.
Rick was a master at keeping the aircraft
up to date and in top flying condition.
We had many good times together.

Rick, you may be gone, but you won't be forgotten.
When we meet again, we will fly with the angles and touch the face of God.

Rick Scarvies memorial is coming up soon, because of things not in my control I will not be able to attend. I wish I could change this. Since I cannot, Id like to say a couple things on this page, as I feel its the most relevant Drum Corp page.
Rick was the one that came to my school, Jane Adams JR high and gave a recruitment presentation. I was not much into playing a horn, or music at the time, but it was an easy class, and no one seemed to mind that I sucked at playing baritone. About halfway into his presentation he mentioned the corp would go to California.. that was the part that got my attention... So, I joined, knowing Id be happy to go to Disney land.
A couple months later and a good number of basics blocks under my belt, I was pretty much ready to throw in the towel. Rick told me to hang in there, it will get more fun. My Parents were pretty much in line with Rick and made me stick it out. Rick was right, it got more fun. That was the first year Rick established credibility with me.
The Marksmen came along, there was some hub bub, and a lot of positive energy...... because of Ricks involvement..... again it seemed to me to give the effort more credibility. Id watch him carry those tympani's, drive the truck, do extra jobs that seemed to be an adult thing.... it was as I write this, Im now struck with him as a teenager, giving a presentation to a jr high to kids ... it speaks to the trust adults and management had in Rick, Credibility is something that he seemed to carry.
He was always friendly and approachable. Ill miss his subtle smile and handshake.
Some of you know I had short lived effort as a director of a sr corp here... it did not go well, Rick and I were on different views of what a Drum Corp was...... however, he supported the organization and was honest, true, and ever courteous and good hearted. My respect for him became larger as we all went through the many changes that organization went through.
As I said, Rick had credibility, always kept it, was always good for his word, and when he made a commitment his impact was substantial.
Im glad I got to know him a bit, Northwest Drum Corp has lost one of its finest.

Rick was a blessing to our family. He took in my son when Blaine and Laura couldn't afford to get out on their own. Not many men would do that. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to meet this man and was blessed to have him first at Laura and Blaine's wedding and then again at Blaine's funeral. He is family and always will be. Rest in peace in Rick and thank you for watching over my son and daughter in law.

My condolences to Rick's family. I've known Rick since 1979 - 80 back at South Seattle Community College where we attended and became Aviation Maintenance Techs. He was a stand up straight forward man and he will be missed. Hope you are in a better place buddy.
