Caspar Curjel Obituary
Caspar Robert Curjel, a retired University of Washington professor, died peacefully in Zurich, Switzerland on Sunday, October 15, 2017.
Born on November 21, 1931 in Berlin, Germany Caspar and his family fled to Zurich, Switzerland shortly after his birth. Caspar grew up in Zurich and attended school ultimately earning his PhD in mathematics at the Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zrich. Shortly after his 18th birthday and before finishing high school, Caspar met the love of his life Marianne. They were married in 1955.
Upon finishing his doctoral studies and shortly after their wedding, Caspar and Marianne embarked on a great American adventure. As a US Citizen Caspar spent time at Cornell, and Princeton but eventually settled in Seattle. In 1963 Caspar received tenure and a full professorship of Mathematics at the University of Washington where he remained until retirement. He was a dedicated husband, father, teacher and researcher. Caspar had a wonderful sense of humor, loved lively conversations and always asked pertinent questions. After raising their family, Caspar and Marianne enjoyed exploring and discovering the natural beauty of the western United States. They lived and traveled many happy miles together.
Prof. Dr. Caspar Robert Curjel is survived by his beloved wife Marianne, son Ulam, daughter Hania and five grandchildren.

I called Caspar and Marianne when they were in Switzerland on one of many sabbaticals they took. I was a UW student who was house sitting for them in Montlake and was worried about Marianne's begonias surviving the Seattle winter. Caspar found it amusing and told Marianne that if I called about the begonias, they could be certain I would let them know if something really went wrong. I'm grateful to Caspar for many engaging and lively conversations, shared stories and meals and introducing me to Veblen. Although we haven't been in touch in too many years, every time I visit Seattle, I think of him, Marianne, Ulam and Hania. My deepest condolences to you, his beloved family.

Memories of Caspar from Gayle (Hunsaker) Bodorff
Caspar popping succulent cherries into his mouth and relishing each mouthful.
The way his eyes crinkled so expressively.
Laughter was a constant companion in Marianne and Caspar's company.
Caspar's ability to describe something succintly The Pacific Northwest is the most benign place in the
world.
Caspar's unbounded enthusiasm as we watched the moon landing on TV. Caspar, Marianne, my husband, Bill and I watched the historic happening from our king size bed as our only TV happened to be in the bedroom. We were bouncing up and down like kids with excitement. Truly memorable!

We were long time residents and I still am of Montlake.
