Bob Jones Obituary

Bob JONES Bob Jones died at home on September 13, surrounded by family and able to hold on to life until his granddaughter reached his bedside from Chicago. He was 92, and up until a few weeks before his death he lived alone, drove himself to a weekly bridge game, and cut his lawn with a push mower. He died of lung cancer from second-hand smoke. Bob was born in Vancouver, WA on April 3, 1916. He earned a degree in business from the UW in 1941, married a lively drama major named Jean Eminger that same year, then served in WWII as a staff sergeant, directing artillery fire. From France, he took home a Purple Heart, harrowing memories of the Battle of the Bulge, and an abiding hatred of war. He opposed every American war since. Between 1948 and 1972 Bob worked for the IRS, retiring at age 56. Among his many life-time achievements: l He built the family home in Laurelhurst and a summer place in Chelan, where he erected a 200-ft retaining wall, one rock at a time. l He served many years as the volunteer treasurer for the People's Memorial Association, a coop devoted to inexpensive cremations and burials. When he left, PMA had to tap two people to replace him. l He donated to so many nonprofits, he had to track his payments on a spreadsheet: ACLU. Red Cross. Physicians for Social Responsibility. And word of his generosity spread. Soon his mailbox bulged with solicitations, as well as "free gifts" ranging from plastic spirit catchers and American flags to 44 pounds of address labels. He saved these "gifts" and sometimes hauled them out so others could marvel at the waste. l He played host to many good times, taking family members to Maui and inviting several generations of friends to Chelan. With his deep knowledge of politics, Bob was central to many picnic-table discussions that began in daylight and ended under the stars. l Bob was preceded in death by Jean, his wife of 60 years. He is survived by his daughters, Terri Hollinsworth (Joe), Connie Wright (Letcher Ross) and Patti Jones (Dave Hornor) - as well as his three grandkids - Derek Hollinsworth (Kat), Nicole Hollinsworth and Hart Hornor - and his brother, Ralph Jones. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 25 in the Knatvold Room of the University Unitarian Church 6556 35th Ave. NE.

I enjoyed booking your family trip to Maui every year. Talking to Bob a couple times a year and enjoyed seeing him when I delivered the documents to him. Boy you sure could tell that he looked forward every year for the Hawaii trip because he had the biggest smile on his face when I delivered them.
I will definitely miss those times. I was glad to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family

Bob Jones was instrumental in my 25 years as an IRS Agent. I worked for a couple of years and then quit so I could obtain my CPA certificate
The Chief of audit did not want to hire me back (because I had quit) Bob convinced him to rehire me as I would be more qualified with the CPA experience I had.

I don't think that Bob understood how much the trips up to his home at Lake Chelan meant to me. I always greatly enjoyed visiting with Bob and his family at his beautiful home on Chelan.
Going back many years, when Bob was 25 and I was just 16 and preparing for my first driver's test, I remember vividly how Bob told me to always come to a full stop during the driving test and avoid "California" stops.
Finally, I want to say how much I appreciated Bob's help and advice over all of these many years.

I'll miss his newsy, hand written letters at Christmas all about his family. I feel the loss of a wonderful cousin. Please know that I'm thinking of Connie, Terri, Patti and families and wish them peace.

To bob's family, please accept my sincerest condolences.

Everyone admired and respected Bob, for many more reasons than spaces allows in this acknowledgement. Bob had the unique ability to assist his subordinates in so many positive ways, and will not be forgotten by those fortunate enough to have known him.

I worked for Bob in the Review Staff, just before he retired. He was a great boss and I will miss him at the monthly lunchen at Louie's.

I don't know quite how to express how I feel about Uncle Bob's passing. First I am SO grateful that I got to know him a bit better in the last several years. I had so much in common with him and enjoyed every conversation we had-he is one smart guy! Second, I feel kind of empty because, like everyone else, I always thought there was more time to make another visit to Seattle. I thought he would be with us forever. Intellectually, I know that is not possible, but he just seemed to be able to overcome all things. I will think of him always and am very proud to be his niece.
