William Klev Schoening was born in Casper Wyoming to Gudrun Irene Kittilsby Schoening and John William Schoening.

Bill attended Lake Forest Park Elementary then graduated from Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington (Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity). He served during WWII in the Pacific as a US Navy Corpsman. His 41 year working career was spent in Real Estate, Insurance and Boyer Escrow where he made many lifetime friends.

Bill's way of life was the "Great Out-of-Doors". Highlights of his 88 years include growing up in Lake Forest Park with his brothers Peter (deceased) and Paul. Hiking, fishing, camping, hunting and skiing in the Cascade Mountains were among his favorite pastimes. He was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning the prestigious Silver Beaver Award; a member of the Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, University of Washington Alumni Assn., Pacific NW Ski Assn. and Pacific NW Ski Education Foundation.

The shining lights in Bill's life were his beloved wife of 62 years, Carmella; his devoted three children Denise (Tom Peckham), Klev (Rebecca), Dana (Robert Bracht) and seven caring grandchildren; Marissa (Andrew Alwood, fiance;), Alexis (Jon Vetter), Klev, Kohl, Stine, Jens and Erik. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Friday March 7th, 2014 3pm at the Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, 17440 Brookside Blvd NE, Lake Forest Park, WA.

Bill's favorite charities are Seattle Children's Hospital and Boy Scouts of America.

The Burrows will remember, arent too many of us old farts left. Sr Burrows ( 97 yo now) hit me, jr, with the news today, sad, liked Bill, did business with him over the years, lost contact in the past 10, but always wondered what he was up to, would get some inf from Jenny ocasionally. I skied with him a few times and was impressed with his athletic ability,older than me by a mile ,would kick my butt on the slopes and he would always cut me the slack when I messed up an easement or? Yea , he left an impression on my family. Hate to see the icons go!

When I was about 12 years of age I was a member of Boy Scout Troop 328 which met at the Lake Forest Park School. I remember going to my parents and telling them I wanted to quit the scouts and they asked me to hold on a while longer as there would be a change shortly. Shortly after that a new scout troop was formed, #348 and one of the new leaders was Bill Schoening. Bill and the other two new troop leaders, Norm and Garth had a great impact on my life, I received my Eagle Badge about four years later. I remember the many 8 day hiking trips taken in the Cascade mountains every summer and the many camporees and other scouting activities including building log draw bridges, cooking for large groups on search and rescue call outs and cutting firewood to raise money for new camping equipment for the troop.

While attending college I lived at home and remember getting phone calls from Bill asking me to pick up a new water heater at Sears and installing it in one of his rental houses, or painting the apartment below his real-estate office, or repairing a vandalized house. Bill was my insurance agent for many years and he was my escrow agent for the home I now live in and that was 32 years ago. It has been a while since I talked with Bill, but I think of him often as he help me become the person I am today. Some of the strengths I learned from Bill include my personal integrity, honesty, respect and love of nature, caring for others, and many more.

Carm, my condolence, love and prayers go out to you and your family.

Bill, knowing you for these some 60 plus years has been a blessing for me, may the Divine Light shine upon your soul.

You know, you travel thru life; you meet a lot of people; but the memory of some of those folks just stick like glue to the old memory bank. Such it is with me and the Schoening Family. As a teenager working at the ski shop at Stevens in the mid 60's, I had many interactions with Bill and Carm, and of course with those Girl Scout cookie selling daughters of theirs. Always a smiling face and a genuine smile from Mom and Dad. They were so happy to see you, so energetic....and genuine. Just some really nice people! I can't say I knew them well, but it was always nice to see what I consider to be "old friends". Three of my brothers in law were in the Scouts with Bill and I believe my sister Ruth even baby sat for their kids. Wow, such very GOOD memories. I am thinking of you Carm and wish you all the best.

Uncle Bill, Auntie Carm, Although I didn't get to spend the younger years with you, it was the two of you and your overwhelming love that welcomed me back. You automatically loved us all, because we are family. No better example of what family is than yours.
I am grateful to have some wonderful memories of time spent with you both. I will miss Bill's laughter and stories but he will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this tough time. I love you, Cheri

I have such wonderful memories of Bill and your family- being married in your home, hunting in the Cascades, all the Boy Scout activities. He contributed so much to so many lives and had such a zest for life. He will be very much missed.

Dear Carm

Bill and Carm came 2 times to Iceland and stayed with us and we got to know each other pretty well.

We traveled together in many places her in Iceland and had good time to listen to each other.

There where story's from the family the children and the grandchildren. We understood there are strong family ties in this family and proudly followed the grandchildren's achievements' and milestones.

Bill was a good storyteller and it was pleasant to listen to his story's from the cabin in summer and winter, story's from fishing trip´s in British Columbia and all the description's of the land in Washington. The Mont Rainier, Stevens Pass the Cascade Mountain´s Mount Helena the Puget Sound and the island´s and many exiting places we had never heard of before.

Bill´s story form his early days with his brothers and father when his father cooked a stew on Sunday it was to last all week un till they made another one.

It was a good time we had with you and nice to be with such a great honor people.

My thoughts and prayers go out the Schoening family. Bill was always such a positive and jovial person to be around. The nickname of 'Snowball Heussy' he gave me while skiing as a lad up at Stevens still resonates today. We were all so fortunate to be around such a great man with a pure love of family and the outdoors. I can still hear his booming laugh and see his broad smile.

When I was seven years old, the Schoenings took me with them on a camping trip to Spectacle lake, deep in the Oganogan. After two hours of driving, Klev and I asked that classic question. “How long until we get there?” Bill replied, with an air of authority, “two thousand telephone poles!” He seemed pretty sure of himself, so Klev and I, impressed with Bill's mastery of this fantastically simple way to measure great distances, commenced to counting. I'm sure that Bill glanced over at Carm and that they shared a smile at his little caper. I'm very sure we gave up long before even getting to four hundred.
When I was nine, Bill shared with me the secret to success. Early one morning, at the cabin, Bill declared, as he rousted us from bed, “You can't hoot with the owls at night, and soar with the eagles in the morning!” You can look through hundreds of Harvard Business School studies, and thousands of self-help books written on the subject, and not find anything as direct and insightful as that.
Later, he showed his comedic side when he admonished us to “Be alert! America needs lerts!” that may not get a-lot of laughs with adults, but Bill knew his audience, and we thought it was hilarious.
The man was like a modern day Will Rodgers to me.
In the past couple of years, my grandson and I would sometimes stop by to visit Carm and Bill at the care facility. It was inspiring to see the care Carm gave to Bill, and her devotion to him is a testament to the love they shared.
Bill Schoening's life is a fine example of a life well lived and he will be greatly missed, and as you look around today, you have to agree with Bill Schoening, America could use some more lerts!
