Linda Kay (Stavig) Mortland

On January 14, 2015, Linda Kay (Stavig) Mortland of Kirkland, WA, lost a 12 month battle with cancer and passed away at Evergreen Hospital, where she had been hospitalized since December 13th. Linda was born in Seattle on April 5, 1943 to Arthur (Grandpa) Stavig and Bernice Stavig. She was the last of three children, having two older brothers. The Stavigs lived in Lake City, where Linda attended Elementary and Junior High Schools. Linda graduated from Lincoln HS (Seattle) in 1961 and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Elementary Education from CWSC (CWU) in 1964. She taught one year each in Marysville and Othello, and 31 years in the Lake Washington School District. While teaching in LWSD, first at Central School and then at Helen Keller when it opened, she participated in the organization of many curriculum programs, particularly in English and social studies. Linda was also active in the Lake Washington Education Association, where she was a building rep, an association bargaining team member, and eventually vice president. She attended many of WEA's annual Representative Assemblies as a delegate from LWEA and helped several colleagues win election to local and state offices. She also attended many annual NEA RA's. Linda retired from the LWSD in 1997, going on to become a delegate to the WEA-Retired Board and Pre-Retirement Seminar Committee for WEA-Retired. Linda eventually chaired the Retirement Seminar Committee and earned the WEA-Retired Member of the Year Award in 2013. Linda enjoyed collecting Madame Alexander Dolls and Beanie Babies, traveling to Europe, locations of national meetings and conventions, time shares in Cabo, Hawaii and the Oregon Coast, and cruising in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and the Atlantic, through the Panama Canal and along the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Linda is survived by her husband of 49.5 years, Ken Mortland of Kirkland; her daughter Kenda of Kirkland; her brothers, Dr. Darrell Stavig of Camano Island and Gordon Stavig of Seattle/Oakland; five nieces & nephews, seven grandnieces and three grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her father Arthur (1980) and her mother Bee (1981).
