Marcella (Marcy) W. Bergner

August 1, 1929 ~ April 21, 2015

A life well lived. Marcy was an amazing wife, mother, and caring friend. She had a passion for education and devoted her adult working life to teaching in public high schools. Her career started at Brookline High School in Massachusetts over 50 years ago and never ended. Marcy taught chemistry and home economics at Kearny Mesa High School in San Diego and retired in 1985. She moved to Maple Valley in 1986. Retirement did not sit well with Marcy. In 1988 she returned to teaching as a full-time substitute teacher in the Tahoma School District. She was still teaching at the tender age of 85 up until two weeks ago. Outside of work she was an extraordinary knitter, a great cook and an expert at solving crossword puzzles. Marcy is survived by her beloved husband Richard Merrill, two sons Lou and Barry, 6 grandchildren and thousands of family members, friends, colleagues and students whose lives she touched and bettered along the way.

Services are being held at 11:00 AM Saturday 4/25 at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton. The Marcella Bergner Scholarship Fund is being created in her honor to benefit graduating high school students going to college to become teachers. Tax deductible donations can be made out to Tahoma High School PTA and mailed to PO Box 74, Maple Valley, WA 98038.

She was an amazing woman! If you were out of your classroom and she was there you knew that everything would be taken care of. She was always quick with a laugh or a hug. She will be deeply missed!

During high scool I was a terrible student and VERY depressed. Mrs Bergner was so kind to me and ALWAYS took extra time to talk to me and help me. She really cared about all the kids. She was a wonderful person. I just loved her! I still do!

I had the privilege and pleasure of knowing Marcella for fifteen years. Her death is a great loss to me and to Tahoma students, but the memory of her cheerfulness and love of life will be an enduring joy.

I've been thinking of what to say for the last few days, and I ended up writing a poem on life and death, which I dedicated to Grandma Marcy:Our Sorrow

My prayers are with all of her family, friends, and students; she will be missed.
