Joan E. Miller, 64, died of complications from a spinal cord injury and dystonia on November 5,

2016. Joan lived in Seattle since 1983 and enjoyed hiking, climbing, sea kayaking and birding. She summited many of the area's highest peaks and explored much of the BC and SE Alaska coast by sea kayak. She made four trips by canoe or kayak above the Arctic Circle.

Joan was born in Drexel Hill, PA and received a BA in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania where she met her future husband, Peter Briglia. Joan and Peter were married in 1974. Joan then attended the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1978. After a veterinary internship, veterinary surgery residency and a few years of work in the medical field, she decided to attend the University of Washington's School of Medicine, graduating in 1990. She practiced internal medicine at Virginia Mason, first in Bellevue and then at the downtown Seattle clinic. In 2006, she started working as a Medical Consultant for the Washington Disability Determination Service in Seattle and retired in 2010.

Joan was the recipient of numerous academic and professional awards, most notably being selected as one of Seattle Magazine's Best Doctors in 2002. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, friend to many and cherished her relationships with patients and co-workers.

Joan is survived by her husband Peter Briglia and brother, Russell (Mary). She has requested cremation. Remembrances can be made to Doctors Without Borders.
