Karlis Rekevics Obituary

Karlis REKEVICS Born October 2nd, 1931 in Liepaja, Latvia, left us peacefully on October 10th, 2002. Karlis was a man whom few could describe adequately - stoic, quiet, opinionated and usually right. He challenged everyone who knew him by making you question and think. He is survived by his wife Vija, son Karlis and daughter Elizabete. His life was well-lived, and included travels around the world, great architectural accomplishments and mesmerizing artwork. Among his favorite things were clock making, restoring vintage British cars, art (watercolors), and all things of beauty. Among his many contributions to the city of Seattle was his integral part in the revitalization of the Pike Place Market in the early 70s - Karlis was the lead Architect for the project. He was also a partner at Bassetti Architects until he retired in 1996. His presence is sorely missed and he has left an indelible impression on those who knew him. Remembrance celebration to be held at the Latvian Community Center (11710 3rd Avenue N.E.), Friday, October 18th, 2002 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Baltic Studies Program at the University of Washington, The Bellevue /Liepaja Sister Cities Committee, Latvian Fraternity Fraternitas Metropolitana, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research - or buy art and live!

Dear Vija and Family,

Karlis will live in our memories as member of our grammar and highschool days in the DP camp in Wuercburg, Germany. We will treasure and remember our scouting experiences. Most of all I am glad that we met you and Karlis in Chicago this past summer.

I was shocked when Peyton called a few minutes ago the tell me that Karlis had died. I can not adequately share my memories of him. He was a man larger than life, with untiring energy and creativity, who will live on in the memories of all who know him.
