COLE CAMP - LaVerne Ruth Bahrenburg, 91, of Cole Camp, passed away Friday, October 16, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Care Center, Cole Camp.
She was born on September 5, 1929, in her parents' farmhouse near Cole Camp, a daughter of Otto Herman and Mabel Mayme (Tietjen) Bohling.
She grew up on a farm near Cole Camp and was baptized on September 22, 1929, and confirmed on April 2, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church. While attending high school, LaVerne played volleyball and in her senior year was both captain and Cole Camp High School Carnival Queen. She and Irene Heisterberg loved to go dancing on the weekends and Harold started going with them; and they soon began dating.
After graduating in 1948, LaVerne eventually moved to Kansas City and worked for Montgomery Wards Department Store. On April 8, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cole Camp, she was united in marriage to Harold Bahrenburg. This union was blessed with the gift of two children: Dennis Dean and Diana Kay.
While living in Kansas City, LaVerne was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She was a stay at home mom while her children were young and for a short time, worked for Cook Paint and at Lake City Ammunition in Kansas City. They moved to Cole Camp in 1991 to tend to their growing cattle operation and moved their membership to Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar Guild.
LaVerne loved going to estate sales and had a fondness for animals. She raised flowers of all kinds and even won several ribbons at the Cole Camp Fair for her entries. She enjoyed making elaborate birthday cakes for her children and grandchildren when they were little.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Harold Bahrenburg of the home; a daughter, Diana Pence of Kansas City; a son, Dennis Bahrenburg and his wife Sandy of Blue Springs; two grandchildren, Heather Bray of Kansas City and Daniel Bahrenburg and Hanna of Raymore; four great-grandchildren, Maxwell Bray, Alexandria Bray, Leo Bahrenburg, and Owen Bahrenburg; numerous nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Mabel Bohling, two sisters, Ruby Shikles and Sylvia Morris, and two brothers, Harvey Bohling and Otto Gilbert Bohling.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2020, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cole Camp with Rev. Gregory Truwe officiating and where the family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Cole Camp.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery or Alzheimer's Association
in care of the Fox Funeral Home, Cole Camp.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Bahrenburg, Jim Bahrenburg, Steve Douglas, Larry Eckhoff, Wayne Homan, Jim Russell, and Ray Shikles.
