Bobby Evan VanNatta, 68, died after a battle with cancer Saturday, January 5, 2019 in Frankfort where he had lived since 2005 with his mother, Peggy Hundley VanNatta. A native of Shelby County, he had attended Shelbyville First Christian Church and was preceded in death by his father, Cecil VanNatta, and his sister, Shirley.

A 1968 graduate of Shelbyville High School, he played football, baseball and basketball for the Red Devils. After graduation, he attended Georgetown College before transferring to Eastern Kentucky University where he was a member of the gymnastics team and earned a master's in education to become a teacher and coach.

His first teaching position was at Shelbyville High School and then he transferred to Shelby County High School.

Bobby eventually left the classroom for wide open spaces out West before settling in Florida for 25 years during which time he worked in a restaurant/bar and played in a band with friends.

After returning to Kentucky in 2005, he played in a band at a grocery store/diner at Bald Knob and as a member of the Andy of Mayberry program at Capital City Christian Church for five years. Bobby could play the guitar and upright bass as well as the mandolin - designing and making his own with Mother of Pearl inlaid in the shape of Kentucky and with his name.

Besides his mother, he is survived by several cousins, including Fran Floyd who was a constant caregiver since August, two nieces and a host of friends.

His life will be celebrated Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Shannon Funeral Home with visitation from 11 a.m. until the start of the service at 1 p.m. in the chapel conducted by long-time friend Duanne B. Puckett. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery where the service will take place in the chapel.

Because of his love for music, memorials may take the form of donations to Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum, 311 West Second Street, Owensboro Ky 42301.
