Timothy Guiney Obituary

Our beloved Tim left us during the early morning of February 16th, after a 2 year struggle with cancer. He spent his final days surrounded by family and devoted friends, at home on Santa Barbara Avenue, where he lived the majority of his 63 years. A long-time dedicated member of the law enforcement family in San Mateo County, he began his career in 1969 as a full-time reserve Deputy Sheriff for the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. He later joined the Brisbane Police Department, which at that time was a combined public safety agency, where he served in many patrol, fire-fighting, administrative and supervisory capacities. He left Brisbane in 1990 to assume the position of Chief of Police for the Broadmoor Police Department until his retirement in 2002. Tim had attended the College of San Mateo, the University of San Francisco and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Academy, and also served for many years as an associate instructor at Monterey Peninsula College. Since his retirement, he has worked as an independent consultant for other agencies, and for individuals who looked to him for guidance in preparation for promotional exams, done strictly on a volunteer basis. Besides his 33-year career in law enforcement, Tim truly believed in giving of his time whenever possible, and sat on several boards and commissions, including the Service League of San Mateo County, the Daly City-Colma Chamber of Commerce, and the Daly City Employees Federal Credit Union. He was the founder of the Police Activities League and Adopt-a-School Program in Brisbane, founding member of the Brisbane Exchange Club, and creator of the "Cops and Kids" North County community day. Tim was highly respected by his peers, and his accolades are impressive, however he would humbly admit that his greatest roles were filled at home. Tim was the husband and life-adventure partner of the late Kate Bray Guiney, who predeceased him in 2011. He was the most treasured Dad of Michelle Fogarty & son-in-law Bill Fogarty, and Katie Guiney; most adored Papa of his grandson, Will; most loved and admired brother of Susan Paden, Ted Guiney & brother-in-law Randy Houston, and Peggy Guiney Fry; and most giving Uncle of Sean & Matt Paden and Shannon & Colleen Fry. His enduring friendships with both his ex-wife, Pam Guiney, and his caretaker, Bernadette Gonzalez, were a great source of comfort to him, especially as he braved his final days. The love he had for his innumerable friends was profound, his generosity with both time and money was profuse, and his humor was profane. His best days and most cherished moments usually involved any combination of family or close friends, a drive out to the coast or through the redwoods to Boulder Creek, the top down in a convertible and a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone. The soundtrack for these excursions was his endless story-telling, done with such character they will never be adequately duplicated. His charisma and personality were giant, just as the void created by his loss will now be for so many of us. A memorial mass celebrating Tim's life will be held at St. Robert's Church, 1380 Crystal Springs Road, San Bruno on Wednesday, February 20th at 10:30am and a reception will follow at the San Mateo Elks Lodge, 229 W. 20th Ave, San Mateo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the 100 Club of San Mateo County, 100clubsmc.org, or The Service League of San Mateo County, serviceleague.org.

Not sure what to say?

Tim was an awesome guy! It was great to work with him in the Brisbane - Daly City (Cow Palace Beat) area when we were both young officers for the two police departments. We always had each other's backs. RIP brother.

Tim was one of the finest human beings I have ever met. He was a "cops' cop" . He always had a smile, and a helping hand and showed the greatest loyalty to family and friends. I just cannot believe he is gone. His memory will be treasured by all of us. Mary Ellen O'Toole

Tim was always kind enough to drop whatever he as doing and take time to talk with me whenever I went to the Broadmoor station. It was a honor to know him.

Tim would be proud of both Michelle and Katie today as they spoke of him. He was an honorable man who was admired by many. Michelle, you can pass on some great stories to your son as he grows up about hid Papa. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family. God will hold Tim in the Palm of his hand for sure.

I had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Tim and Katie through working at Kaiser and, dubiously, preparing their chemotherapy. What an inspiration, both of them, and I hope now they can be together again- maybe driving up the coast with the top down. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends left behind. Such a great, great man. Let your memories console you.

I can't seem to find the right words to express how much your friendship meant. You gave us your guidance, laughter, support and most of all, your love. I just want your family to know how much you loved them because Timbo and I always enjoyed your stories of how they were doing. You spoke with such pride and we were thankful for your updates. Now, both my Timbo and you are gone but you both shall forever remain in my broken heart. I love you Chief. Sherry

Tim was the best! Always so full of fun and life! Met him in the mid'60's when he worked with my husband, Bill O'Connor, at Wilson-Sereni Jeep in Daly City. He's been a lifelong friend and will always be remembered! RIP Timmy!

February 19, 2013

I grew up in Broadmoor and Tim was as great of a friend/mentor to me as he was a police chief. My mother and I had visits with him quite often as I had shown much interest in one day becoming an officer. Although it never happened I never forgot him, or how well he treated myself along with my family. He will be surely missed but never forgotten...

I was fortunate to meet Tim over 30 years ago when he was with Brisbane PD and I was with Millbrae PD. We would meet, car to car, on US 101 at the brisbane scales and discuss "pressing issues". You only meet a few friends in a lifetime that you would do anything for because they would do the same no questions asked. Tim was one of those friends. Tim was and is priceless!

Honored to have known Tim first as a neighbor and then as a friend for more than 60 years. On matters of this world and especially on matters of the heart, Tim was a Giant. He was always there when needed and usually with a big smile. Our prayers are with the entire Guiney family. Vaya Con Dios, Tim. Roger Prince and Carolyn Prince Ficcadenti

God will ask Tim, "What did you do with those I gave you to love?" And Tim will of course be modest and say, "I did my best to show them I loved them." Our gracious and all-knowing God, understanding that Tim did so much more than is asked of us mere mortals, will simply nod and respond, "You did enough. Now come home to rest." We already miss you Timmy.

Tim---What a good good man, great cop and even better leader. You helped me a lot during my career and will be forever grateful. We both made it to see our grand kids who are true gifts. You were always a class act who anyone could come to for help/advice. Loved our conversations. A true loss to everyone especially your family and to cops everywhere. Don Mac DCPD
