Cynthia Hellpap

Cynthia Marlene Rueda Hellpap

April 5, 1956 to March 18, 2013

The world has lost a dancer.

Cynthia Rueda Hellpap has passed away after a noble two year struggle with breast cancer. She was only 56 years old. Born and raised in San Francisco, Cindy's parents, Adolfo and Maria Rueda, immigrated to this country in 1952 and settled in the Mission district of the city where she grew up with her sister, Maritza. She was schooled in San Francisco then worked for 18 years as an executive secretary for PG&E, switching gears in 2003 to work for the San Mateo County Sheriff's crime lab. In both her work and her volunteering for Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, she delighted in bringing her enthusiasm and infectious laugh to the tasks at hand.

But it was on the ice that she truly sparkled. She first learned to skate at the Ice Arena in San Francisco and real practice soon followed. She entered her first competition at the age of 14 and by 18 was winning medals in local skating contests. Eventually, she qualified in Adult Nationals in Michigan in 1990 and placed fifth in her division.

She met Ron Hellpap, in March of 1987, and they were married September 10, 1988. In 1990, their daughter, Brittney, was born, followed five years later by Austin, their son, and the family settled in Redwood Shores in 1990. Her life in the Shores was typically active thanks to her kid's activities, but an occasional drive to the coast to watch a Pacific sunset put a big smile on her face.

Cindy is survived by her husband, Ronald Hellpap, her children, Brittney and Austin Hellpap, her father, Adolfo Rueda, her sister, Maritza Yousef, and her nieces, Elyse and Emily Yousef, and her nephew, Eric Yousef.

Vigil Services are scheduled for Sunday, March 24, at 3 pm at Crippen & Flynn Woodside Chapel, 400 Woodside Road, Redwood City. A Mass will be offered Monday at 10 am, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1040 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont.
