Carl Robert Vogt Hungerford, son, brother, husband, and friend, died at the young age of 38. While most of his life was filled with happiness, over the last few months he was suffering and, sadly, on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, Carl ended his life. All who knew Carl remember his brilliant intellect and kind nature. He was admired for his wry sense of humor, infectious laugh, great hair, and twinkling blue eyes. Carl was polite, humble and gracious. His friendships were loyal and solid; his close friends became family. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I thought of Carl today, I came here and realized it has been almost a year since his passing. I wanted to let his family and friends know that his light continues on in more hearts than you can likely imagine. For a few years in Cole Valley I lived in the apartment above Carl. It was easy to see he was brilliant, kind, an old soul and a thoughtful person at first glance. He spent more time with my roommates than he did with me, but his presence left a forever imprint on my heart.

I worked with Carl at Washington Hospital Center. Carl always said that you never knew what you were walking into when you started your shift there, but I always knew when Carl was on the schedule with me, it was going to be a good night. He is absolutely one of my favorite coworkers ever. He had such a beautiful soul, and he was a phenomenal nurse. My heart continues to be broken that his light isn't here to warm us, but I have nothing but fond memories of him.

I met Carl when I was working at Hospice by the Bay. He was one of my preceptors when I was new to Hospice. We went out together a couple of times. I was impressed with the way Carl interacted with everyone we met. He graciously took me to his home during a workday for a brief visit. I learned a lot about him. He taught me a lot about Hospice Nursing which I will be forever grateful for.I was so sorry to hear he chose to end his life. I lost my father to suicide. My condolences to his family.

Carl was an amazing person with a heart filled with so much compassion for others. He will be dearly missed. I always admired his passion for his work and his loving relationship that he shared with Andy. There was so much love between them. I am blessed to have known him. Rest peacefully. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Carl touched so many lives. He was my
husband's Hospice nurse in 2015. Carl
was always upbeat, caring and informative.
We always looked forward to his visits
and even shared laughs with him at times.
My heart goes out to his loved ones.
Heaven has a new and very special angel.

I am heartbroken and along with all of Carl's family, friends, and community, I'm grieving terribly. Carl radiated love and compassion and showed me in many ways, "how" to be in the presence of those that need us most.

Carl was one of my dearest friends, and I miss him every day, but I'm also grateful to have had such a remarkable person as a friend. He was more than a friend, really; he became like a brother to me. Carl was the type of person who was always so available to people around him - to listen to their stories, to help them through their difficulties. Through our friendship, I believe that I also became a better person, and while Carl is no longer with us, I know his friendship will forever have an impact on me. He was a bright, shining light, providing love and care to all those who crossed his path. He will always be in my heart.

I am absolutely saddened and heartbroken over Carl's passing. We met back in 2004 when he was here in Philadelphia right before he started at Yale. Carl was a great guy and a devoted friend. We kept up our friendship through the years and always found time to catch up no matter the location. I'm in a state of shock and trying to come to terms with his passing. I'm sending condolences to his family and his partner Andrew.

I only met Carl once or twice but in reading all these wonderful stories about him he sure sounds like someone I wish I had gotten to know better. What an amazing individual. I believe that everyone that was able to have this person in their life even for a short time feels so blessed. His birthday is one day after my own sons birthday.
My heart goes out to his entire family and friends. I am saying prayers for his husband Andy. I don't know what you are going through but I know that this good person will always be near you and I pray that you will always feel his presence. I am sure Carl will do as good in heaven to help people as he did on earth. Another star is shinning bright now.

As a young boy, Carl once told me that my deceased husband was in the light. Maybe that's because Carl, almost more than anyone I have known, was light, and is light in every way. He brought illumination in the form of his sweet smile, gentle humor, dear heart and bright mind. Mostly he brought it through love. Dear Carl, I hope that your light will always expand, we hold you in our hearts, and I will never forget you, my dear one.

As Carl's co-worker and fellow Hospice nurse, I was inspired by his kindness, intellect, and compassion. There are not nearly enough adjectives to describe the truly amazing, wonderful human being he was. I hope to honor Carl's life in the way I live mine. My thoughts, love, and prayers go to Andy, Carl's family, friends and co-workers. I miss you so much, Carl.

Carl was my dads nurse during his hospice. I thought Carl was such a good guy really liked him. I was so grateful how he cared and interacted with my dad and was such a truly giving person. My dad graduated from hospice so we know longer needed his care. My sister knew him better as they live nearby. They are heartbroken.so sorry for his husband and family for their loss. Thank you Carl!

Dear Katy and Family,
I have so many fond memories of a young Carl at Ross School. I marveled to read of his many accomplishments as an adult, but was surprised by none of them. As a young boy, you could already sense the impactful adult he would become. He was a warm and caring friend, a more than capable student, and an absolute joy to have in the classroom! I feel privileged to have played a small part in his life.
My thoughts are with all of Carl's family.
Fondly,
Kathy Frank

My heart goes out to all who loved Carl. I only knew him a few years but he touched my heart the minute I met him. To care for hospice patients I knew he had to be loving and kind. When Andy's mom Mary and I stayed with Carl and
Andy I really got to know him well. He would come home from work and we would talk about the kind of work he was doing. I knew he was amazing. My heart is broken. Cry as much as you want to and heal when your heart tells you to. Remember we never lose a loved one... God is keeping him safe until we are together again.

Hello,
I'm sorry I never met your son but I extend my condolences. My daughter also ended her life in 2012. I am also a member of this
very heartbreaking family of survivors.
The journey you now face is long and hard. Filled with questions, guilt, unresolved issues, etc.
Know this young man was in deep pain... pain no one could fix on this earth. Love his memory

Carl was my father's hospice nurse a few years ago. He was amazingly patient and kind with my very difficult dad in the late stages of Alzheimers. He was critical to helping manage our relationship with an ever-changing staff at dad's assisted living facility. I grew quite fond of him in the short time I knew him and am sorry to hear he has ended his life. My deepest condolences to Carl's family. Kathleen Gaines
