Sr. Diana Petz RSM Obituary
Sister Diana Petz, RSM

Sister Diana Petz, RSM – After serving sixty-five years as a Sister of Mercy, Sister Diana died in Oakland on July 9, 2018, at the age of 85. Born in Buffalo, NY, Diana was the older of the two children of James Petz and Lucy Zabaldo Petz. The family moved to Los Angeles, and after graduating from Bishop Conaty Memorial High School in 1950, Diana entered the Sisters of Mercy in Burlingame. She professed vows in 1953, taking the religious name Sister Mary Lucia. Sister then spent the next twenty-five years in elementary education at St. Gabriel School and St. Peter's School, San Francisco; Our Lady of Guadalupe School, Bakersfield; St. Pius X School and St. Aloysius School, Los Angeles; and St. Catherine's School, Burlingame. She also served as principal at Our Lady of Guadalupe for six years and at St. Peter's for five years. Her experience with the Hispanic community at St. Peter's prompted her to spend a year in the bi-lingual/bi-cultural program at the Mexican American Cultural Center in San Antonio, and the following year as part of a pastoral team in a parish outside Mexico City. In 1980 sister returned from Mexico to minister to the Hispanic communities at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Bakersfield, and also in St. Anthony's Parish, Menlo Park. In 1983 sister moved to St. Athanasius Parish in Mountain View as pastoral associate and began a very significant twenty-two year ministry supporting the Hispanic community through baptism and marriage preparation, addiction counseling, music and prayer group support, lector and Eucharistic minister training, and leadership training. In 2001 Sister Diana was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal for her outstanding work in the parish. Sister retired to Marian Oaks Life Center in 2014 and spent her last seven months at Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland. She will be remembered as a quiet, effective administrator; a sensitive, supportive counselor; and a cheerful, loyal friend. Sister is survived by her brother Tony and her loving community of the Sisters of Mercy.
A vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 18 at Marian Oaks Life Center, 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame, and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated there on Thursday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. Memorial gifts may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010.
