Eleanor Roure Obituary
Eleanor Roure

Eleanora Maria Defelice Roure passed away peacefully August 3, 2018 at the age of 99 in her Berkeley home of 62 years. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond Roure, of 51 years. She is survived by her only child, Bill (Pam), cherished grandchildren, John (Bridget) and Diana (Brett), and her darling great granddaughter, Aubrey Claire Roure.
Eleanor was a fifth-generation Californian, descended from three of the thirty families that arrived with the De Anza expedition in 1776. She was a member of the greatest generation, born May 21, 1919 in San Francisco to Laura and Jerome Defelice. Eleanor attended Notre Dame de Victoire grammar school, graduated from St. Rose Academy (class of 1937) and attended Dominican College. She worked at St. Paul Fire and Marine, Commercial Union, and Industrial Indemnity. She was extremely proud of her work and what she did in contributing to the World War II effort as a volunteer with the USO and at hospitals.
Eleanor and Ray met at a New Year's Eve Party in 1954 and were married at St. Vincent De Paul Church in San Francisco in 1955. They then moved to Berkeley where she entered into her next career as a loving wife and mother, volunteering at St. Jerome's School (school nurse and librarian) and St. Mary's High School. She was a consummate cook and baker and learned ceramics, knitting, needlepoint, and wood refinishing. She loved playing bridge. After Ray retired, they enjoyed traveling, walking, movies, taking classes at UC Extension, entertaining friends, going to the Commonwealth Club and most of all doting over their grandchildren.
When Ray passed away in 2006, she continued to travel, volunteer at her church, enjoy good times with her friends, and attend cultural events. Eleanor felt blessed to live to see her great granddaughter arrive when she was 98 years old. She was a devoted member of the Young Ladies Institute #159 Mothers of Perpetual Help, Los Californianos, and The Society of California Pioneers. Almost up until her passing she kept up to date with current events, read two newspapers a day, and was a voracious reader of novels and biographies.
A memorial mass will be held on August 17, 2018 at 12:30 PM at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1145 Gilman Street, Albany. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ambrose Church or to St. Mary's College High School, 1294 Albina Street, Albany, 94706. Eleanor will be greatly missed by her family and friends. To know Eleanor was to love her.
