Erik Harri Jalovaara
Erik Harri Jalovaara, 45, of Pacifica, CA, died unexpectedly at home December 18, 2020. He was born in Queens, NY on April 16, 1975 to parents Harri and Rosemary, "Mudder & Fadder".
Erik graduated from Terra Nova High School, class of 1993. After graduation he toured the world under the sponsorship of skateboard companies Anti-Hero, Spitfire, Independent, Real, and many others. In 2004, he advanced in the electrical field and continued the trade until his final days. An avid outdoorsman, Erik thrived on lengthy coastal treks finding solace among "the sticks."
A loyal friend to all, Erik's true legacy is skateboarding. Erik loved skateboarding to his core. The triumphs, the pain, and the skateboarding family he built over 30+ years. His raw, natural talent was legendary. He had a unique vision that translated to a creative style and lines that were all his own.
He kept it pure and humble, brushing off recognition at the risk of tying his passion to a paycheck. He acted locally advocating for parks and poured his blood, sweat, and tears into building things to share with all skaters. Through it all he made friends coast to coast and across continents; you knew he had your back absolutely.
It would be easy to build a long list of the gnarliest things Erik's done over the years, but anyone who skated with him knows he contributed to the sport most by pushing everyone around him. He was happiest when hyping someone up and see skaters challenge themselves to a new level. He naturally mentored kids by rolling with them and showing how it's done. He could intuitively pick out the kids who needed skateboarding to escape or fill some gap in their lives, giving them special attention, wheels, stickers or whatever they needed to feel good about coming back to skate.
Erik was also a standing figure among the recovery community, extending his hand for those who asked for help. He became known for his "detox hikes" that were hilarious and brutal, helping others sweat it out before checking in to rehabilitate.
Above all else, Erik was an open soul with a generous heart and adventurous spirit. He lived life to the brim and loved fearlessly. The first to ensure others' well being with an unequivocal loyalty, those closest to him attest to his remarkable care taking ability and concern for others.
His influence is immeasurable and his legacy will live on through so many people.
He was predeceased by his father Hari Kalervo Jalovaara, 8/14/41 - 12/1/20, survived by his mother Rosemary Jalovaara, dear friends and loved ones, and countless skateboarders around the world.
