Ernest Lubbe Obituary
Ernest Joseph Lubbe

Ernie was a true San Franciscan – born, raised and lived his life in the City, but for a brief stay in Seattle. He was born on August 25, 1942, and lived most of his early years in the Potrero District. His schooling included St. Theresa's through eighth grade, and then on to Sacred Heart where he graduated in 1960.
Ernie had a passion for knowledge and he gained much of that knowledge through books. He was a dealer in rare and antiquarian books for most of his life. He opened Ernest Lubbe Bookshop on Golden Gate Avenue across from the old KGO studios in the 1970s. He frequented estate sales and garage sales, and assisted people wanting to sell old books to add to his collection.
He left the City when commercial rents escalated steeply and relocated to Seattle where people read more books than anywhere else in the country. He quickly learned that although they read books, they did not buy books. Ernie returned to San Francisco and sold his books online, specializing in books about California.
Ernie loved to discuss almost any subject but his expertise was San Francisco and its history. People, events, tragedies and celebrations were his specialty, and it did not matter which decade you wanted to discuss.
Ernie leaves behind his extended Lubbe, Cevolani, Risso, Harms and Calderaro families.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday August 15th at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave. Daly City at 6:00pm.
