Obituary Condolences

Frances C. Strauss, doyenne fund raiser for the ACLU of Northern California for over fifty years and widow of renowned sociologist Anselm Strauss, died in her sleep on June 15th. Born Frances Cooperstein in 1918, in New York City, she moved to San Francisco in 1960 where Professor Strauss taught at UCSF until his death in 1996. Once here, Fran continued the volunteer work for the ACLU that she had begun in Chicago in 1953. Fran and her husband shared a large range of friends around the globe, including his colleagues and students, and her associates at the ACLU. Their lives were closely interwoven, each of them beloved by people in the other's world. Fran is survived by her nephews Elliot and Ted Zucker, her cousin Patricia Hess and four great-nieces and nephews. A Memorial and Celebration of Life will be held at 6 PM, Thursday, June 28, at the ACLU office, 39 Drumm St. San Francisco, 94111. Questions: [email protected] or 415-621-2493. Gifts in memory can be made to the ACLU-NC Foundation at the above address.
