George Robert Concannon Was born June 2, 1919 at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, CA, to Hilda Morgan Concannon (deceased) and Robert Concannon (deceased). George went to Stamford University, and Harvard Business School. After graduation, George went into the Navy, to serve his country. George commanded both refrigerator ships, and destroyers. He was a Lt. Commander, and fought both in the North Atlantic, and the South Pacific, during WWII. He was one of the youngest Lt. Commanders in the Navy at the time, and commented that "one out of seven U.S. Navy men killed in the entire war was killed in the Battle of Okinawa." His ship shot down five kamikaze planes, and fought for 95 consecutive days. After the war, George worked at Marchant Calculators, as a sales representative. He later was president of Concannon Vineyard, of Livermore, which was founded by his grandfather, James Concannon, in 1883. From there, George founded Concannon & Company, which focused on commercial real estate in San Francisco. George also worked for Kaiser Industries, focusing on housing development on the island of Oahu, HI. After retirement, George dabbled in painting, and was listed in Who's Who in the Art World. George was a competitive swimmer, competing at the masters level, on the International Circuit, well into his 80's. George swam right up to the end, swimming the day before his passing. George kept his mind busy, by acting as an assistant professor, globally. He taught at Stamford, UC Berkeley, Webster University in Austria, Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Tours in France, University of Wollongong, in Australia, Urals Electromechanical Institute, in Russia, Estonia Business School and Concordia International University, both in Estonia. George was a compassionate man, and spent many hours in the chaplain service at the VA Hospital, Palo Alto. George was married two times. His first marriage was to Martha Wood. His second marriage was to Betty Wing Jr., a popular radio and TV personality in the San Francisco Bay Area. George is survived by seven children, Elisabeth Concannon, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Richard Concannon, Oakland, CA, and his wife Kathleen; Lt. Col. Charles Concannon, Papillion, NE, and his wife Beth; Cheryl Concannon, Sun Valley, ID; Kate Castle, Oakland, CA, and her husband Hal; Bob Concannon, San Francisco, CA, and his partner David Greenberg; and Jim Concannon, Darien, CT, and his wife Cokey. In addition, George is survived by 13 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Celebration for George will be held at Christ Church, 815 Portola Road, in Portola Valley, CA, November 29th.
