Harry Heinz Ambrunn

Harry Heinz Ambrunn passed away peacefully at home with his family on January 6, 2019. Harry was born on December 12, 1934 in Munich, Germany. As Jews, Harry's family was persecuted and his father and uncle were imprisoned in Dachau. Harry and his family eventually escaped from Germany in 1939 and fled to Manila, The Philippines where they survived for seven years as stateless refugees.
In 1946, Harry's family was allowed to emigrate to the United States. They settled in Oakland, California. Harry graduated from Oakland Tech High School, then went on to UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, graduating with a degree in Pharmacy. Harry worked for more than fifty years as a Pharmacist, owning and operating independent pharmacies in Burlingame and San Mateo. He served as President of the San Mateo County Pharmacist's Association and was a member of the San Mateo County Health Commission for almost a decade.
Harry is survived by Margie, his loving wife of 38 years, his children Linda Ambrunn Costas and William Mark Ambrunn, step-children Robin Benas Spencer, Matt Benas and Dana Benas Ott, first cousin Ellen Lieberg Brothers, his nieces and nephews, and many friends. Papa will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren Brendan, Ethan, Lauren, Charlie and Veronica. Harry was predeceased by his mother and father, Liesl and Ludwig Ambrunn, and his big brother, Peter.
Memorial service at 11:30 AM on January 25, 2019 at Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo, CA. Contributions may be made to Samaritan House and Peninsula Temple Beth El.
