Henri Marie-Rose Obituary

Henri Marie-Rose Passed away on March 12, 2010 succumbing to heart failure. He was 88. Born in Franois, Martinique on January 5, 1922, the son of Joseph & Appien, he began sculpting at the age of 7. The French government awarded him a scholarship to attend Ecole National Suprieure des Beaux Arts in Paris after 2 years of active service in the French army during World War 2. He studied for 8 years, winning numerous awards & exhibiting throughout Europe. There, he met & married Marjorie Raitt & moved to S.F. in 1953, living briefly in North Beach before settling on Potrero Hill, his home for 58 years. Within weeks of his arrival, he won the Emanuel Walter Purchase Prize, & later hosted an 18 week series on KQED entitled "Techniques in Sculpture". In 1960, his work was exhibited in a one man show at the De Young Museum. He went on to exhibit across the country & in Brazil. He spent his final 12 years as a teacher & mentor for Recology's Artists in Residence Program. On Saturday May 1, 2010 from 1 to 3, they will host a celebration of his life & work (401 Tunnel Avenue, SF), followed by a show of his work on Friday May 14, 5 to 9, & Saturday May 15, 1 to 5. He is survived by his wife Marjorie, his sons Philippe & Pierre, his grandchildren Madeleine, Connor & Andrea, his sister Raphaelle, residing in New Caledonia, as well as numerous half-brothers & sisters.

Henri was an extraordinary human being.
His gentleness showed through always,
and there was always a twinkle in his
eye that told you that beauty was more
important than anything. If it was
a lovely lady, so much the better.
