Irene Bechtel Obituary
Irene Ganin Bechtel

February 1, 1933 - June 12, 2018

Irene Ganin Bechtel, our adored mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 12th, 2018 culminating a vibrant and faith-filled life. She was a loving, strong, generous, adventurous, and intelligent woman.
Living much of her life in her beloved San Francisco, she attended grammar school at St. Dominic's followed by four years at St. Rose Academy, where she graduated in the class of 1950. While attending UC Berkeley, Irene pledged Alpha Xi Delta and over the years continued to enjoy many reunions with her sorority sisters. Following her college graduation, Irene married the love of her life, Don, and together they raised two wonderful sons in the Westlake district of Daly City. For the next twenty years, her life revolved around "her boys", a rich parish life at Our Lady of Mercy, and her work as a dental hygienist. She was a proud member of the OLM Women's Club and the Ignatian Guild Board. Irene relished her time in the San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet where she appeared elegantly in many performances over the years.
Following her beloved Don's passing in 2000, Irene treasured the time she spent supporting the charities of Little Sisters' of the Poor and the Salvation Army. A San Franciscan at heart, Irene was involved with the San Francisco Breakfast Club and the Nob Hill Association which filled her time with companionship and joy. For the last three years of her life, she made many wonderful friends at her home in Magnolia of Millbrae. Irene is survived by her sons, Jay (Willow) and Rich (Missy), her grandchildren, Brian, Jeff, Alicia, Kate, and Mark, and her cousins Marina, Natasha, Dimitri, Tanya, and Irene.
To celebrate Irene's beautiful life, friends are invited to the funeral at Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, 2040 Anza Street, SF, on Tuesday, June 19th at 10am. A Memorial Mass will be held for Irene at Our Lady of Mercy Church on a future date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Little Sisters' of the Poor.
