Jack Belton Burstein

October 26, 1929-January 25, 2018

Jack Belton Burstein, JD, passed away peacefully at age 88 on January 25, 2018, in his home in Napa Valley. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Leatrice, his brother Leland (wife Kerry), his son Jeffrey (wife Suzette, and children Jeffrey, James and Mika), his son, Joel (deceased), his daughter Julie (husband Josh and twin daughters Sienna and Sadie) and sister-in-law Lori Horne (husband Mark Horne). He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, adored by all his family and friends.

Jack was born in Salinas, California on October 26,1929. As a youth, he performed in their annual rodeo and later attended the Salinas Rodeo every July. He was also an excellent lifeguard, working summers in Lake Tahoe to pay for his legal education.

In the world of law, Jack was a legend, highly respected as a full-time attorney, practicing general law as a solo practitioner in Vallejo, serving clients throughout the Bay Area, Napa and the Central Valley, until the age of 88. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Hastings College of the Law, San Francisco, he passed the California Bar in 1955. He became a partner with Millard Smith, forming the law firm Smith and Burstein in Vallejo. Upon Smith's retirement, Jack continued as a sole practitioner. As a member of the State Bar of California, he took joy in serving people full-time for 63 years, until his last day. Sharing a beautiful marriage with his wife, Leatrice, and loving his whole family, he touched the lives of thousands with his spirit of service. A friend described him as "kind, gentle and honorable." With his boundless energy, compassion and wisdom, he was known as "eternal and invincible." He was one of a kind, a man deeply loved by all. We will miss him more than words can express.

A Memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 1 at 11:00 am at Congregation Beth Shalom of Napa Valley, 1455 Elm Street, Napa, California. Donations may be given in lieu of flowers to Planned Parenthood of Vallejo Health Center; Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth of San Francisco; of San Francisco.
