Janet Clare Simpson Obituary
Janet Clare Simpson

Janet Clare Simpson, 79, of Redwood City, California, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013.

A gathering in celebration of her life will be at 4pm on Wednesday, June 19 in the picnic area of Edgewood Park (10 Old Stage Coach Road, Redwood City).

Jan was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to Charles and Viola Heald on April 11, 1934. She graduated from Sheboygan's North High School in 1952 and received a degree in teaching speech and drama from the University of Wisconsin in 1956. She moved to California after graduation and married Stewart Root Simpson on July 4, 1957. She worked as a high school teacher for a number of years before becoming a full-time mother. She was involved in PTA, directing school plays, leading Campfire girls, among other volunteer positions. Around this time she developed a passion for pottery. Her artwork adorns many homes. Jan was known for her love of nature and she worked tirelessly to share and protect the area's natural beauty. She loved to travel to exotic locations and took many adventurous trips, including traveling to Guatemala, the Philippines, Indonesia, Turkey, the USSR, and even to the Central African Republic to see her son while he was in the Peace Corps. Her favorite local vacation was to the Trinity Alps where she inspired many fellow vacationers, including her own family, to explore the many hiking trails. She volunteered as a docent and ranger at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, took and led many hikes as part of the Sierra Club, and eradicated non-native plants as a member of the Native Plant Society. She was passionate about wildflowers, going to great lengths to get pictures of all the varieties she saw. She was also a poll worker for many elections.

Jan Simpson is survived by her husband, Stewart Simpson; children, Dawn (Simpson) Swanson, Stew and Lesley Simpson, Lisa (Simpson) and Ken Staton; her brother, Charles Heald; and her treasured granddaughters, Cameron, Molly and Erin Simpson and Vanessa and Elizabeth Staton.

In the spirit of Jan's love of the outdoors, memorial donations may be made to Friends of Edgewood Park (http://www.friendsofedgewood.org/). Sign the guestboo at www.crippenflynn.com
