Joseph Brewster Workman

June 19, 1934 - July 10, 2018

Joseph Brewster Workman of Berkeley, CA passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at the age of 84 with his wife of 55 years Judith Beck Workman at his side. He was born in 1934 in Akron Ohio to Ira Vincent and Virginia Brewster Workman.
Dr. Workman was a well-respected scientist who earned his PhD in Physics from M.I.T. in 1970. Joe completed his Undergraduate work at the University of Maryland after which he worked for General Electric Company (GE) where he was awarded a Tau Beta Pi Fellowship to attend M.I.T. to complete a Masters degree. During his time there, he was elected to a Sigma Xi membership. He returned to work at GE in Schenectady NY for several years where he developed lifelong connections. His work was highly respected and many of his colleagues encouraged him to return to M.I.T to complete his PhD. After completing his PhD he went to work for Avco-Everett Research Laboratories where he spent significant and enjoyable time in consultation with Hans Bethe and Arthur Kantrowitz.
In 1972 Dr Workman moved with his family to Berkeley CA where he founded Berkeley Research Associates which specialized in theoretical and numerical modeling of plasma dynamics. He was an avid supporter of the arts, especially theater and opera, contributing generously to both. He thoroughly enjoyed the study of history and world cultures spending many of his latter years traveling the globe with his wife. He was fascinated by the development of technology through time, especially the history and evolution of trains.
Joseph Workman is survived by his wife and two sons and their wives Jonathan and Sara, and Jeremy and Nichole, along with six beloved grandchildren Nicholas, Angela, China, Christopher, Viola and his step-grandchild Isaac. A public memorial will be held this fall at the Berkeley City Club.
